Brady Emerging? Barnes Not Said No Yet!

* We have confirmed the News & Observer’s report that the Rick Barnes courtship continues. We got wind of this earlier today, but could not verify it. When the day passed without any public comments from Barnes and without an announcement that he had signed a new contract we felt better about it. At 4:50pm, we got the wink from someone we trust.

* Why not? Why not keep talking to him? If he hasn’t said no, then State has nothing to lose in the process as long as we spend time pursuing other coaches in parallel. If Barnes has actually said no to NC State, using the interim time before his finalized Texas contract is signed would be a genius ploy by Fowler & Company (did we just say that?) .

* Why not make the rest of the world think that the courtship continues? It builds the NC State brand in the marketplace while also providing us (a little) negotiating leverage with other coaches. If talks are seriously continuing between the parties, then NC State will finally have a drop-dead date for Barnes if the Pack identifies another top target during the conversations.

* Why not still be at the table if Barnes’ Texas contract ends up not being to his liking? I don’t know if you noticed, but that “evil NC State fanbase” reacted with amazing style, grace, and understanding when the reports broke last night that Barnes had said no to the Pack. Perhaps we aren’t nearly as crazy as previously reported?

John Calipari

* Although our sources aren’t as strong on this, we believe that those close to the NC State search have spent some of the last couple of days discussing the potential candidacy of John Calipari. We hope that some truth and reality replaced innuendo and inaccurate perception during the conversations, but we honestly have not heard anything on the topic.

* We are encouraged the same Caulton Tudor/News & Observer report that says:

John Calipari of Memphis and John Brady of Louisiana State likely will be contacted soon. And the Wolfpack still has interest in Jay Wright, but the Villanova coach is seen as a long shot at best.

Jay Wright

* We understand that Jay Wright has issued an ambiguous “I’m happy at Villanova statement”, and we hear that his wife is very attached to the area. What nobody truly knows is if his wife is attached enough to the area to forego a raise of $500,000 to $1,000,000 to come to a school that already has the practice facility and other tools that Wright has to wait for Villanova to attempt to build.

John Brady
John Brady’s LSU (and Louisiana-centric) Biography

Pack Pride is talking about the emergence of LSU Head Coach, Brady as a potential head coaching candidate as is the following blurb from CNNSI.com:

Though Texas coach Rick Barnes remained first on the wish list of N.C. State basketball fans Thursday, Louisiana State’s John Brady emerged as a possible person of interest. LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette said N.C. State has not contacted athletics director Skip Bertman for permission to talk to Brady. Brady told Bonnette he is on the road recruiting and trying to get LSU back to the Final Four. — Charlotte Observer

We may not love this piece from Mike DeCourcy of The Sporting News, but we definitely agree with this perspective:

NC State probably can get LSU’s John Brady if it wants, but it’s hard to see how he would improve the coaching situation in any area. Brady is more quotable than Sendek but also prickly and difficult. Brady is a solid strategic coach, whereas most of their colleagues would deem Sendek to be gifted in this area. As recruiters, both have been extremely effective.

* John Brady has been at LSU for nine years and you have probably never heard his name until this year. As much as Billy Gillispie is Texas-centric, John Brady is equally Louisiana-centric and has no history of ACC connections.

* The irony behind the truth of NC State’s potential interest in John Brady and not John Calipari is sad. Part of the unfair knock against Calipari is an academic perception that is not accurate. Has anyone ever checked the admissions requirements of Louisiana State University athletes? If you think Calipari recruits marginal students (who graduate), then you haven’t met the average LSU basketball player.

* People like to hypothesize about “smoke screens” related to these coaching searchs all of the time. We don’t have any scoop on this, but we guess that this smells more like a smoke screen/plant than the average name floating. Brady has only been making (approx) $750,000 per year at LSU. Suddenly, NC State has running around college basketball with a $2.0 million warchest and Brady starts calling? Can you say leverage?

* ^That explains Brady’s side of the equation. NC State’s side of the equation would be throw attention in the opposite direction. Read this Technician piece. We honestly believe that there is no way that even Lee Fowler is this dumb as to let this slip during the one time that he has spoken in public during the search. This has got to be a plant of some kind.

* As luck would have it, one of StateFansNation’s contributors is a huge LSU fan. So, TigerFan weighed in on the topic of John Brady for us today.

Attack the messenger, not the message. Enjoy your two million dollar a year man: Frank Haith. When the announcement finally arrives, I, along with the rest of the college basketball world, will be laughing at you.

Rumor (for what its worth its 3rd hand info) has it he said yes tentatively pending him talking it over with family. The family wasn’t as keen on leaving Austin as Rick was, which threw a wet blanket on things.

I have to believe that if something has surfaced that indicates Rick is revisiting the decision, then it bodes very well for us. If he really said no, family’s not going to let me go, then that should have been the end of story. If he’s open to more discussion, then I feel he really really wants the job and is trying to talk the family into it.

    Busting NC State Myths:

Great facilities: YEAH if you’re a toothless Canadian ice skating for a handful of Nascar fans.

Great fans: Ask Sendek if you guys are great.

Lots of money: Let’s see how much you can really cobble together. 120K salary; 60K British Knights shoe deal; 14 hog dowry from Wendell Murphy. I hardly call that two million a year.

Gregg, if you’re laughing, how will a mouthbreather like you get any oxygen to your brain?

Wait a second — I just happened upon a theory that explains A LOT. Keep it up, laughing boy.

Dear Rick, a legend once said “Don’t give up, don’t ever, ever give up”… therefore I am not giving up on landing you as our next coach. Call me naive, stupid… whatever I don’t care.

The fact of the matter is this… while everyone in Texas is talking about the spring football game, we are talking about YOU and basketball.

I just know that if we were to introduce you as our next basketball coach, NC STATE will hold the press conference in a sold out Rick Barnes Center… urrr RBC Center. The University will have the marching band playing the state fight song, the State Cheerleading squad will be there, ticket scalpers will make large profits outside the arena.

We are a basketball school!… You become a legend at a basketball school if you win a national championship. People around the country could care less that Florida played in and won the national championship… they are a football school.

If the latest reports are true that there is still hope alive… I will live by the words of the great Jim Carey…

    so you’re telling me there’s a chance…

Calipari’s in the mix, Tudor’s now saying & SFN’s ratifying that Barnes is back in the mix — a really crappy morning has turned into a pretty good day.

From this perspective. I understand that from another’s perspective, things have gone downhill like mad.

    1a Barnes
    1b Cal

    I don’t know after that…

Coaches Tomato and Calimari would be a great duo to torpedo your entire athletics department. After the death penalty, Fowler could finally concentrate on boosting women’s volleyball standards.

SWEET! Somebody tell Cardiff we have a new entry in our surreptitious “Most Hilariously Bitter” category.

hey gregg….lay off the “K”-y jelly

  15. the_real_G_Doyle 04/07/2006 at 8:39 PM #

You guys love to hate me . . . seriously, State could, should and must get a top level coach. It would be great for the ACC and just plain awesome for the Triangle. Don’t know any truth to the Barnes still available rumor, can’t wait to find out. You guys under rate Fowler, I think he’ll surprise you.

  16. site admin 04/07/2006 at 9:11 PM #

Just an fyi – “Gregg” is a confirmed parody. His listed e-mail addy starts out “dookiepuss”. LOL.

  17. gregg_doyel 04/07/2006 at 9:20 PM #

LOL. Just hire somebody good, Fowler! Go STATE!

  18. WestCoast 04/07/2006 at 9:29 PM #

First of all, “Doyle” you’re a complete Jack Ass. Second of all, I don’t blame you for being scared of what could be brewing over in Raleigh. You kind of remind me of Hilary Clinton…afraid of success that’s not your own.

As for the coach, we’ll pay the price $$ whatever that might be to have someone come in here and put their heart into the job, inspire everyone, produce, and who doesn’t make friendly with his neighbors in Chapel Hill and Durham. Respect your neighbor…but don’t be afraid to let your dog take a shit in his yard once in a while.

    We need a fighter.

Doyel really did say that crap. It was posted on the CBSSportsline site on the front page of the NCAA BBall section. You can read it here but you will need to hold your nose while you read it and probably take a shower afterward:

    http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/9361047

FYI – The only thing that is going down the toilet is Doyel’s reputation as a journalist.

I really hope there isn’t a chance of Brady coming. LSU fans have been trying to get rid of him for years. He basically got lucky that two of the biggest studs just happened to go to his daughter’s high school. It was pretty easy for him to recruit them and when they weren’t able to out-athleticize UCLA, he didn’t really try a plan-B that I could see. I would prefer Barnes or Calipari but if those don’t work out, then I would like us to take a look at Jeff Capel. Frank Haith is a gamble but I would rather see him than Brady. It is too bad we missed out on Bobby Gonzalez.

Also, thanks for separating fact from fiction on the Calipari thing. I was against him initially but if he runs a clean program then I am behind him 100%.

Lee – I am giving you the benefit of the doubt on this one. Good job pulling together a strong offer for Barnes. Please get us someone good.

  21. Cardiff Giant 04/07/2006 at 9:43 PM #

Hell, I knew this “Doyel” was a Wal-Mart Tar Heel parody troll. You see, the REAL Doyel happens to be, like “Killjoy,” a virgin who lives in his mother’s basement. He has to be home in bed by 9:00 PM – and this “Doyel’s” last post was at 9:20.

What could be more embarassing – a tool, masquerading as another tool. Double toolism.

  22. old13 04/07/2006 at 9:52 PM #

Could all this be a foil just to announce Rick (or whoever) at the Red-and-White game tomorrow?

  23. doug74 04/07/2006 at 9:56 PM #

Gregg has that triumphal smugness that carolina fans use to celebrate their notion of how the world should be. Duke fans have their own kind of arrogance of course, but somehow their black humor is not as annoying to me. Kind of like old money vs new money uppityness.

  24. GoldenChain 04/07/2006 at 11:01 PM #

Doyel has NEVER written one nice thing about State so it should be no surprise.
He says all the things the Wolfpack Nation hates: we should have been happy with 17-54 against the Big 4, no body wants the job, and the FANS are the biggest problem.
Funny, those fans have scratched up $2mil. That alone should prick someones interest.
And the idea that herb will be more successful is laughable to me, not because hernb isn’t a decent man and coach but because PAC 10 foes Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, and Washington will not make it easy.
Guys like Doyel make me more determined to get someone who will kick butts and take names.
