Austin American Statesman: Barnes to get $400,000 raise to remain at Texas

I’m told that Texas basketball coach Rick Barnes has agreed to a contract raise that will increase his salary more than $400,000 and put him among the five highest-paid basketball coaches in the country.

It makes perfect sense; he would simply be giving up too much to come here. If you were to list out all the pros and cons, you would probably make the same decision.

I hate to miss out on Barnes, but it looks like it’s time to move on… Bring on Cal!

ok… we HAVE to get Calipari

this is the longest roller coaster I have ever been on

I dunno about this whole smokescreen idea. I think we maybe think what we like to think. One minute we want to offer Fowler a cigar, the next we want to bust his nuts. This rumor mill is trying us all.

This is quite unnerving! Are we going to get Calipari or what? His resume is more impressive than Barnes anyway.

I need an answer for my sanity sometime very soon

This is the first time I’ve spent an entire Saturday glued to my computer!
I hope it’s Cal – he could become a legend at State! If Lee gets him, all is forgiven…

If Calipari really is our next guy, I hope that our guys didn’t ignore his calls as previously reported.

    viva Calipari!

Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems we should seal the deal before Memphis folks get wind. But then again, why would Calipari let that happen if he can play the offers against each other. Perhaps if we really wanted the State job. I sure hope there is some truth regarding the contact with Calipari. I do not want a 2nd tier coach dammit!

IMHO, all other names besides Calipari seem like a “B” to me

Can’t say that I blame him, but.. Rick, if and when you get home from your national championship someday and wonder where everyone is for the parade…they’ll be at the spring football game

Ok, I walked away for an entire two hours…I can’t stay away! Lee’s on top of things, and I can’t believe how tight lipped those around him have been thru this entire process.

The Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis is clueless. I would suspect The Jackson Sun newspaper will be the first to report on the Calipari story.

Jeff, you should ban this “Doyel” asshole posthaste, I believe.

I think Doyel is meant to be a parody poster.

Great job SFN. 1st post ever. Have not been able to stay away for more than a few minutes. Original Sendek supporter for the simple fact that I was afraid we would not pull a big name coach. COME ON CAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! RETURN US TO THE GLORY DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that this is perceived as an official “no”, and that the week long delay hasn’t hurt our chances elsewhere. I think that the “native son” might have put us in a bad spot.

dont think so…Cal is very interested

  20. Jamie 04/08/2006 at 6:23 PM #

I hope you are right, monte. Did fowler do the radio show today? I haven’t heard/seen any updates about what he may have said, and I don’t get it where I live.

  21. monte kiffin 04/08/2006 at 6:27 PM #

Ya, he did…didnt say much at all. He is keeping very tight lipped. He pretty much explained procedure and thats it.

^He said a whole lot of nothing. Basically, he said that if we hear anything about anybody, that means that they are just posturing trying to get a raise out of their own school. He also said he’s keeping a tight wrap on everything, and that we’ll know roughly 24 hours before the official press conference, because that is when the coach talks to his players to tell them he’s leaving, and that’s when the news leaks out.

This is a quote from Jwolf

My wife thinks I’m having “computer sex”! I’ve been glued to the computer for 3 days. Thank goodness the weather has been bad and I’ve had a cold@!

I was a little skeptical about Calapari and work with a bunch of Carolina grads who were calling him “dirty” yesterday. I’m glad I’d done enough research on him the last few days and thanks to SFN, I shut them up pretty quick.

I really take that stuff mostly with a grain of salt anyway. Anytime I really have enough, I remind them that one of my Army buds took Billy Cunningham’s Spanish final for him.

Anyone have an update on how Marcus Stone looked in today’s scrimmage? Might as well talk about something else for the time being….

  24. monte kiffin 04/08/2006 at 6:58 PM #

    Have no clue….anyone know?

  25. BJD95 04/08/2006 at 7:00 PM #

I can’t imagine many folks were there – why sit on wet bleachers and watch Marcus Stone kill worms, when you could sit in front of the computer all day and pray for Calipari?
