Wolfpackers Jumping Off Ship

What a day!!!

Lee Fowler’s annual version of “I support Sendek” has unleashed a fire storm out here in the real world where workers are held to standards and decisions are based on merit and not only on personal infatuations of big farmers or career climbing Jethros.

I haven’t been in the office since this morning (have to work towards my annual production goals, you see) so I haven’t had the opportunity to read any message board posts outside of these comments…but, I can’t count the number of personal emails and telephone messages of disgust that I have just picked up.

The message that Lee Fowler and Chancellor Oblinger are sending from NC State is crystal clear – NC State accepts failure to succeed at levels that are comparable to other institutions and NC State underscores this lack of ambition through its long term record of management decisions.

From what I can tell, the NC State Community is responding to this message in pretty big numbers. Many Wolfpackers that I know are simply giving up and walking away.

But, I have an additional observation about this situation that I had never considered much prior to the last few days. The interesting part of my experience in recent weeks (and particularly over the last 48 hours) is NOT that former great Wolfpacers have reached their breaking point and are apathetically walking away from their support of NC State…but it is THE TYPE OF PEOPLE that are giving up and walking away.

Since State’s Basketball season has ended, I have interacted (in person, on phone, on email) with the following set of Wolfpackers:
* 4 CEOs of companies with revenues in excess of $50 million
* 2 CFOs of nice-sized companies
* a partner at a major accounting firm
* 2 accountants of Big Five firms
* 3 employees of NC State University
* 4 attorneys from 3 different (highly-recognizable) law firms
* a judge
* 5 bankers employed by 2 of the 4 largest banks in America
* 2 consultants
* 1 political consultant
* 1 real estate developer
* 1 finance executive for a Fortune 100 company

These former Wolfpackers all shared what I considered to be interesting traits:
* Each is considered to be very successful by modern standards of the business world
* Each is beyond disgusted with NC State
* Each is between the age of 30 and 50

Of course, it is just a observation based on my personal interactions, but the fact that each of these successful individuals are between the age of 30 and 50 years old struck me as interesting. I wouldn’t think that it bodes well for the future of NC State University for so much young and successful talent to feel so disenfranchised and frustrated with the University. But, what do I know?

In twenty years NC State will be wondering why it has a huge leadership gap within its alumni community and why its alumni support the University at a rate disproportionately less than other schools (that is..if anyone at NC State would ever dare use defined, measureable, and comparable data as a benchmark for behavior). Perhaps at that point the members of the current Board of Directors, the Chancellor, Wendell Murphy, Lee Fowler, and Herb Sendek will step in and save the future of the University. Well…maybe the 2 or 3 of them that are still alive at that time. Because, I know an awful lot of talented folks that have little interest in being a part of it now…and, I fear forever.

I will leave you quotes from the last voice mail message that I received today from the CFO of a major business headquartered in the Triangle:

“I will be reducing my Wolfpack Club donation to the minimum for my lifetime rights. #&%@ it. It is time for me to grow away from NC State. I will still pull for them. But I will not care anymore.

Sadly, ^this is highly consistent with dozens of other interactions that I have personally had recently. Good Luck, NC State.

    It’s a sad day in NCSU Basketball to hear those comments from big time money supporters. I’ll be damned if Fowler has finally run the program in the ground.

    Scooter Sherril wasn’t NBA talent. A. Harrington wasn’t a McD AA. Damien Wilkins had a family that couldn’t stay out of the way. Damien didn’t light it up at UGa either.

    Neil Fingleton was also a McD AA and Bill Guthridge was considered to be one of the greatest big man coaches of all time.

    There are McD AA misses all the time. What coach in the ACC is “producing” a lot of NBA talent besides K and now Roy?

    I have already notified the Wolfpack Club and Fowler via email that I do not intend to purchase any basketball tickets as long as Sendek is the head coach. This despite the fact that I have lifetime rights. I’ve already scaled back from 4 seats to 2 seats and I’m looking forward to scaling back to 0 seats. At this point, I consider the investment made through the Wolfpack Pride campaign a total loss (to use an investment term). I’m seriously considering forfeiting my football seats as well just because I have no desire to support the Ath. Dept. or WPC at this time. And let’s face it, the football team next year will struggle to even be competitive.

    Matt, agreed completely that we need to worry about what we have, not everyone else. In my opinion, that is what this whole thing is about, what we have, or dont have. We dont have a chance to compete for championships, and we will not under Sendek/Fowler leadership. Wait, is that an oxymoron?

  5. Rick 03/22/2006 at 4:40 PM #

    “I have been telling folks that the people who have a say are those who A) buy tickets, B) fund scholarships.”

    That is absolutely wrong. The LTRs have locked in the ticket holders.

  6. Steve 03/22/2006 at 4:43 PM #

    This place seems to only welcome those that are unsupportive of NCSU and the WPC. Is that correct? Otherwise, I’d like to contribute if it were open to honest debate and opinions from all sides.

    SFN — Steve…and anyone who thinks it is unfair that we choose to delete your smart ass posts….”this place” is open to common-sensical debate and opinions from all sides. “This place” has made it very clear that it isn’t open to comments, judgements, criticisms and referrendums about “this place”.

  7. Matt E. 03/22/2006 at 4:44 PM #

    I dont like people using the “investment” term when talking about LTR’s. The only “return” you ever get is the right to purchase the season tickets to those seats every year. That’s all your buying.

    Steve,
    Lots of people feel this way about Herb.

    DT,

    Lots of people feel the opposite way about Herb than you do.

    As a result of the today’s article and other factors I have been thinking about over this situation I took the following steps:
    I cut my annual capital and scholarship contributions in half, I further noted that if Lee Fowler or Herb get any kind of raise or contract extension I will lower it further. Second I resigned my volunteer duties for some University organizations.

    I am full aware that someone will lose a scholarship because of this, if it had not been for a scholarship I would not have had the opportunity to go to State and be in a position to give back to the University. I have tried for the last 4 years to address concerns with the administration about concerns I had with our coach (Tommy B. comments last week could have been a transcript of some of my letters) They have not been addressed nor does it appear anyone cares to listen so I found myself having to use the only option I saw left.

    I have been a WPC member since I graduated in 1992, I donated to both Wolfpack Pride and Goal Line Drive Campaigns, I am a season football ticket holder, I was a basketball mini-pack holder when I lived in NC (moved to SC in 1998). I was a volunteer rep. in the state of SC until today.

    The administration doesn’t get it so I can’t see continuing to send money…

    If we go back to the early and late 90’s I remember the University and Athletic Administration coming to fans and support base asking for millions and millions to build these new facilities because that was all we needed to get over the hump and get our programs back to our long and past heritage on a national stage. I think eveyone would agree with me the Wolfpack Nation has more than eagerly stepped up and met that challenge. But now at a time when those same supporters start speaking up and asking where is the progress, the administration now casts a deaf ear and says how dare you ask for accountability. It further troubles me that an administration has allowed this situation to continue to develop and cause such an infighting among those who are supposed to be supporting NC State it has now resulted in a situation that is counterproductive and have them working against it. Thanks to LTR’s many of those who want a voice heard cannot afford to do so in a way that seems would make the Athletic Department sit up and listen. It is my hope that the WPC will find a way to allow these folks to pay a holding fee or something that would allow them to not buy season tickets next season so that this deaf administration will open up their ears.

    But for now I have to move on to other things in my life….. unfortunately now in a lot of areas NC State will not be a part of that…

    Having players in the NBA is a strong recruiting tool, as well as a source of positive publicity for the school (think Tory Holt). Good players see themselves playing in the NBA and will probably by-pass any coach with a dismal record of developing talent for the next level. Would you send your McD AA son to a school where the only evidence of that kind of development (in 10 years) is the guys that LEFT the program and DIDN’T go straight to an NBA roster? If you were a blue-chip high schooler, would you take a chance on missing out on the money and fame and “perks” for the simple joy of competition for a great guy? Hmmmm. Yep, I’ll probably be chastised for chasing away recruits, but this is stuff a fifth grader could figure out … it’s not a family secret that’s hidden in the basement.

    David…I know others who have the balls to resign their volunteer leadership positions as well. One of the key contributors to this site being one of them.

    And that, ladies and gentlemen, will be my last post (until next year when we meet to do this all over again). The frustration and negativity of it all is getting to me and my blood pressure. I’ll shut up and simply wear my two buttons: NCSU BASKETBALL: THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS, and NCSU BASTKETBALL: IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER! I’m out.

    Par Shooter – I notified the WPC (Bobby Purcell) of the same thing yesterday. Had basketball season tickets since I graduated in 94.

    Seriously thinking about cancelling my 4 LTR’s for football too and just telling NC State to stuff it.

  17. Sam '92 03/22/2006 at 5:25 PM #

    I too am feeling the fatigue. It’s clear that Fowler is sticking with Herb, and that the chancellor is sticking with Fowler. I don’t expect Herb to leave on his own.

    I’ll pay my membership dues to the WPC and the alumni association, but, if I muster the energy, I will reply to all other requests for contributions with a letter confirming that I am not making any further contributions until there is top-level change in the athletic department and commitment to taking us (back) to the next level.

    When I saw that impressive list my only question was “where was the partridge and pear tree?”

    “Hodge may be the only player of significance for State that ever seemed to improve in my eyes. Josh Powell is in the NBA now but thats because of what he was able to do overseas. Hodge is in the NBDL. ”

    Incorrect on the Hodge part. Yes he was in the NBDL, but he was called back about a week ago to the NBA due to an injury to Earl Boykins.

    “And let’s face it, the football team next year will struggle to even be competitive.”

    I’m in disagreement with you here. I actually see the football team as having a future. Amato is a good coach, they just need to get their offense in line the same time they have the defense in line.

    I am one of the Pack’s top 25 annual donors. I can tell you that I have not cut back at all. Continued support of the program is whats needed. As I stated one time before, the people on this board are not representative of the general feeling for MOST Wolfpackers, especially those of us who cut major checks.

    The program is better than it was ten years ago. Its not where we want it to be, but its consistently gotten better over the years and we have reasons to believe the program will be even better next year. The kind of success we want at NCSU isnt something that can be accomplished overnight in most cases. As long as the program continues to proceed on an upward path, we will stay the course.

    This year’s team dealt with a lot of injuries and special circumstances at the end of the year. Some circumstances that were relatively major in impact were not even made public.

    We are disappointed when any fan feels the need to go elsewhere or to discontinue their support for our program but in the end, you cant make everyone happy, and anyone who would jump ship doesnt truly understand the Wolfpack spirit to begin with.

    great post David C. Evidently to work for either A) the WPC or B) NCSU athletics department, you have to live in a little box meekly swallowing the drivel spouted by Lee.

  22. Fish 03/22/2006 at 5:54 PM #

    Greg,

    Excuses-blah, blah, blah. Texas, LSU, Villanova all had injuries. No use arguing. Sendek is perfect and is the second coming of Jesus to his inner circle. Pretty soon all of his supporters will be wearing old style Nikes, chasing comets and drinking Kool Aide. Oh wait, they already are by believing this program is improving.

    I remember a time when NCSU would hit back. Upward path, you have got to be kidding me. Maybe part of the problem is NCSU has forgotten to educate people on statistics and apply good common sense.

    I for one hope people continue to jump off. That way change will either be made or our available resources will finally match what Fowler and Sendek truly want – a third rate program that accepts LOSING!!!

    Have fun watching futility for the next 10, 20, 30..years.

  23. Greg 03/22/2006 at 6:05 PM #

    Fish, of the other guys I know who are major donors, I would bet my last dollar I am the only one who knows this site exists. I stumbled upon it by accident and have enjoyed the rhetoric.

    You are right in a way though, it would take 10-20 years of losing one LTR holders to equal the donations of a single top twenty five donor. The problem with your argument is that when we lose one LTR owner, another steps up and takes his place. Net zero.

    It is very easy to point fingers and make accusations when you are not involved and the vast majority of people here simply are not involved. Just bystanders.

    If you dont think the program is better now than 10 years ago, go back to starting Curtis Marshall, McCuller, Greg Lewis, and that whole lot. We have made significant progress. As I said, we arent where we want to be, but we are progressing. Ten years ago we were the worst program in the conference. Now we are third or fourth. Maybe five years from now we will be second or third. The goal is still to be number one. If you think there is a quick fix, you should go to Raleigh, request an audience with Lee and give it to him.

  24. VaWolf82 03/22/2006 at 6:16 PM #

    Now we are third or fourth.

    Only if you are extremely selective in what data you look at. Check back the week after the NCAAT is over and I’ll have some data for you to look at.

  25. lumberpack 03/22/2006 at 6:18 PM #

    As long as those with special connections have their personal business needs met, the state of the program does not matter to them.
