Tommy Burleson Says it is “Time for a Change”

Tommy Burleson was on Triangle Sports Talk 1090 AM this morning and said that he thought “there needs to be a change at this point in time”. It would be interesting to know what DT felt about the situation.

Greg — Your point was made. Other rational bball fans disagree. Let it go.

“Not saying he is wrong, just saying someone who has a “voiceâ€? should be more judicious as to where and especially when he voices it.”

More judicious? He wiated ten years before ever saying anything. Any more judicious and he would be mute.

    Greg,
I aplaud you for giving to my alumunus but your attempts to make yourself sound more important (ie I know Lee and Herb) actually taint anything you say.

Do you know what they call it when former players come out negatively against the incumbent coach?

    The tipping point.

If a situation is so bad that a player who has a title ring and was a key player on your best team EVER comes out against the current leaders, then even Scooby Doo would recognize it as a … clue.

If another player who played for a different coach comes out independtly and more or less says the same thing, then both opinions have a lot of weight.

These are not casual fans, gentlemen. They are players who KNOW what it is like to wear the red and white, who KNOW what it is like to play in the ACC and who KNOW what it is like to play against St. Duke and St. UNC. These are not fly-by-night fans who couldn’t stuff the ball through the hoop from a step ladder, these are men who know of what they speak and who are expert judges in coaching because they have played the game at a high level.

Tipping point — let’s hope so.

This is starting to turn into a breakout against Herb. Former players. Local columnists. Regional columnists. An arguable majority of the fan base. If Herb is the genius he is supposed to be, he probably figures that the time to get out is now.

You are fighting a losing battle and looking worse with every keystroke. I am sure TB, altough he may not pay in the amount of money you do for the privilege of a cocktail with with the AD, and he may not have the luxury of a 5 foot plasma TV to watch the games, but I’ll bet he is just as well aware as you and J Wooden of the changes that have occurred since he played the game.

Why do you bring up a players size and what does that have to do with a coach learning how to give his players a fair opportunity to win a game.

You were right about one thing though, Burleson’s comments wouldn’t have much impact if they were made earlier, or later, and that is why they were RIGHT ON TIME.

“I have no issues with a coaching change being made. IMO, it makes a lot of sense in fact. But I disagree with the reactions to our four game losing streak considering the season isn’t over yet. Waiting a week would have made more sense IMO. I think we owed that to the current group of players.”

I agree w/ you 100%…And I also agree that Chris Wright is as good as gone unless we bring in a coach he really likes.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. We’ll find out a lot about Sendek and these kids tomorrow. If they all come out fighting tooth and nail and Sendek actually plays a defense that hints at serious aggression, and we win, it speaks volumes and gives me a glimmer of hope. If we perform like we’ve performed 3 of the last 4 games – I think the entire Wolfpack nation – sans Lee Fowler – would welcome a change.

You cannot correct 10 yrs in one game. Even if they play like the 2005 Heels a change is way over due!

^^The whims of future recruits are insignificant compared to what needs to be done with our program. The program is bigger than any single recruiting class.

  8. Sam '92 03/16/2006 at 5:19 PM #

I’m just wondering who Lee Fowler will hire to replace Herb. Matt Doherty?

“The program is bigger than any single recruiting class.”

This is right, and it should always be that way. The future looks dim.I know it sounds overly pessimistic but along with the seniors I can see Brackman just pitching next year and Simmons fleeing a bad situation. Unless we see the Bulgarian or Turkish junior national teams in Raleigh it could be a great time to be a walk on.

I heard Corch say while tailgating at a football game 3 or 4 YEARS ago in response to a question about whether Herb was the right man for the job… “I couldn’t play for him.”

This isn’t new. It’s just finally gotten to the media.

If y’all think you have a chance of making a lateral hire (i.e., a top coach from a BCS conference) after the way you have treated Sendek, you are utterly delusional. You’re either getting damaged goods (e.g., Quin Snyder), a hot coach from a mid-major (e.g, John Pelphrey), or a hot assistant from a top program (e.g., Cameron Dollar).

Hiring Iona’s coach worked out pretty well once before; maybe you should go after Jeff Ruland.

amen, Tommy. And thank you from the bottom of my heart…

I can see Brackman sticking with Baseball, but I don’t see Simmons leaving. The future isn’t so dim. Chris Wright, Larry Davis, and all those other commits will give us a bright future. Simmons with a good coach would be a star. Courtney Fells is supposed to be a good shooter, with the opportunity he might become one. Herb should be out, and TB speaking out should have aided us in the removal of Coach Sendek. Sure he maybe should have waited till Monday, which would be after the probable loss to Texas (I feel even with Sendek we beat California).

And I’m curious as to why Mike Davis hasn’t been mentioned more often as a potential replacement on this blog. The guy was doing a great job this year until one of his stars (I can’t remember his name, I think it was someone White. He was a sophmore I believe) went down.

It’s great that a former athlete has the guts to state plainly what needs to happen. People have had enought and they are contacting the AD and Dr. O. Maybe after this weekend something positive will happen.

  15. Jeff 03/16/2006 at 7:06 PM #

Just curious…but…how does this impact the team before their NCAA Tournament game considering that they are in Dallas and have no idea that the event ever happened?

Especially in light of their directive not to interact with the media.

  16. Wolfpack Willie 03/16/2006 at 7:22 PM #

Greg: I don’t know your age, but I suspect you’re a might damp behind the ears. I was at State in “74 and have closely followed ACC basketball, before and after my time in Raleigh. Yes, the game has changed, but athletes the likes of which played for State in 73-74-75 come along once every 50 years. If they were 19 yrs. old today, they would still be stellar players. And, I can assure you that Tom Burleson has more knowledge of motivation in his little toe than Sendek has in his whole body.
Not only was Burleson one of the linchpins of a team that lost only once (to Nat. Champ. UCLA) in TWO years, he also played awhile in the NBA.
But, of course, “Fouler” knows basketball.
Tommy, if you’re reading this, thanks for speaking out, and you’re timing was perfect!

JEFF…ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. The only ones that are being affected right now are all us idiots sitting here typing. I sure as hell hope the team is concentrating on basketball and nothing else.

  18. Lumberpack 03/16/2006 at 7:24 PM #

Nothing that anyone says will impact the team in Dallas. That’s just another lie cooked up by Herb’s cult. Herb’s supporters will say anything to protect their man, just like their waterboys will do anything to protect herb on the paysites.

After the way we have treated Sendek? I would turn that one around.

Don’t you think anyone worth hiring would know enough about basketball to understand exactly where we are coming from?

  20. Wolfpack Willie 03/16/2006 at 7:46 PM #

“After the way you’ve treated Sendek”?

You mean letting him keep his job 5 years too long and making him a multimillionaire?

I wish I could be similarly mistreated!

  21. Lumberpack 03/16/2006 at 8:00 PM #

Please mistreat me the same way

  22. jesse 03/16/2006 at 8:35 PM #

i support herb. bad timing by tommy on this comment. state alums should be publicly supportive of their coach even if privately they don’t support him. it sends a bad message to potential recruits. “hey recruits, come to nc state we’re in the big dance every year and we still hate our coach!”

  23. 4NCST8 03/16/2006 at 9:26 PM #

Greg, you’re off your rocker a little bit when you criticize the great Tommy Burleson.

He’s much more qualified than you or me to talk about “great basketball teams.”

You might rub elbows with Fowler, Sendek, and Murphy, but Burleson knows more than all of you combined when it comes to winning basketball.

57-1 over two years speaks volumes.

    Wait to go, Tommy

  24. Fish 03/16/2006 at 9:31 PM #

Yeah we have really mistreated SenDICK. He has had the privilege to coach in the best league and what was one of the top three programs in the ACC and live in one of the top cities in the southeast and rack in millions.

Please Fowler hire me. I will at least recruit a point guard and put Simmons near the basket.
