The Oklahoman: “Folks on Tobacco Road speculate Sendek is part of OU’s coaching search”

The Oklahoman has mentioned Herb Sendek as a potential candidate for the OU Job. You have to register to read the story.

Coaching candidates

List of potential candidates to replace Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson:

Top choices

Tubby Smith (Kentucky): Yes, it’s a step down professionally. But Tubby said he enjoyed coaching at Tulsa and has always spoken fondly of Okies.

Mark Few (Gonzaga): Firmly entrenched up in Spokane, but with Adam Morrison headed to the NBA, perhaps Few is ready to take make a move.

Tom Crean (Marquette): As one of Sampson’s closest friends, he already knows plenty about the inner workings at OU, which would help with the transition.

Lorenzo Romar (Washington): Could the Sooners steal another hoops coach from the state of Washington? UW assistant Jim Shaw worked for Sampson.

Herb Sendek (North Carolina State): Some folks on Tobacco Road speculate Sendek – who has a sterling reputation with the NCAA – is part of OU’s coaching search.

I think we all need to realize, including me, that Sendek will retire as coach here. He won’t be fired because he will do just enough to make the NCAA’s almost every year. And he won’t quit, because no school will pay him what he wants to coach for them.

Which brings up a question: How do the members of HSSS still claim he’s such a good damn coach when his name is NEVER, EVER mentioned as a viable candidate for ANY opeing?

Trout: It was an attempt at being facetious only. I think most people who visit this site know that Herb is not being considered for any Division 1 head coaching position. What was an experiment in hiring him 10 years ago has failed. He probalbly would make a good assistant somewhere, but he isn’t totally stupid. As long as we allow it, he will continue to bob along in mediocrity at NC State. Hooray for TB! Perhaps he can get enough “important” ears to understand what we knew five years ago. Herb was a mistake, and we need to put him behind us!

In all honestly, Herb Sendek would be an excellent fit at Oklamhoma and could excel.

The Oklahoma fans and alums don’t realize that the biggest part of Herb’s problem is that he coaches at a school that is approximatley 25 miles away from both UNC and DUKE. Herb would be excellent in a lower pressure situation like Oklahoma.

Oklahoma has to realize that Tubby is not an option. Few is probably not either and Romar is an alum of Washington. After that Herb is the best option out there. He has proven experience winning in a top notch conference and knows the importance of making the NCAA as a baseline standard for success. He also runs a clean program and is a man of great integrity.

Would actually have to somewhat agree on this one. People don’t realize we are a jaded and bitter group here in Wolfpack land. If we lose to UNC, or if UNC is successful in anything, we have to hear it for a week straight at work or with our buddies.

Heck, UNC will have 2 of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time retire ther (Smith and Williams) and Duke will have another one of the greatest retire there (Coach K). I don’t think any coach in the Big 12 is going to the Hall of Fame or is breaking any winning records. Herb’s has been crucified unfairly because he lost to Smith, Williams, and K. 3 times in this decade teams from the ACC have won National Titles and there are still 4 more years left in the decade.

Herb wins 20+ games a year, gets to the NCAA, and recruits top talent. I bet he goes to the Big 12 wins a Big 12 title in his 2nd or 3rd year.

^Herb must change his ways if he is to win big anywhere. He is a decent coach not a good or great coach by any means.
