Boston College came back to defeat Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles’ victory served to lock NC State into the #4 seed in this year’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament regardless of the outcome of the Wolfpack’s game against Winston-Salem later in the afternoon.
The Pack will face the winner of the #5 vs #12 game (FSU vs Wake Forest) in the ACC Tourney’s Friday afternoon session (2:30 p.m).
Herb Sendek is wiping his brow with relief right now as the Wolfpack’s seeding guarantees that State can’t play Carolina in the semi-finals of the Tournament on Saturday. Instead, if the Pack advances to the semi-finals on Saturday the odds are strong that State will play Duke, whom Sendek has lost to in 5 of his 9 ACC Tournament appearances (1-5 overall).
This works out much better for Sendek’s psyche since many State fans don’t even pretend to think that the Wolfpack should compete with the Blue Devils now. Heck, NC State’s own Athletics Director doesn’t expect State to compete with Duke. (Sidebar: I wonder how public comments like these impact things like ticket sales to the Tournament for Wolfpackers? If you were a State fan living near the Tournament, why would you spend your time and money trying to get a ticket to such a game when the administration is so honest about its “goals”?)
NC State will finish behind Big Four “rivals” North Carolina and Duke AGAIN in the ACC Standings despite Lee Fowler’s expectations and predictions last year expecting State to take advantage of a young UNC team. In addition to Fowler’s comments last season, before this season began Fowler said:
“I think this team has a chance to really do something special
I guess this team’s ‘specialness’ will have to come in the ACC or NCAA Tournament. (Then again, we are talking about the standards of Lee Fowler here. For all we know, #4 could be very special to him).
