Katz on Seton Hall – No Criticism

Andy Katz on Seton Hall’s decision to fire Louis Orr

Seton Hall’s decision to move Louis Orr shouldn’t come as a surprise. Seton Hall AD Joe Quinlan wanted changes and was willing to take any hits for removing a coach who went to two NCAA Tournaments in three years. Orr, a gentleman and a friend to many coaches and players, isn’t an extrovert and that might have hurt him with the Pirate alumni. The challenge of upgrading the staff and the lack of any kind of extension talk basically made him unable to continue. Orr had told ESPN.com last week that he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do, but the decision was ultimately made for him with the buyout of his final two years of his contract Friday. Meanwhile, start the line for this gig: Iona’s Jeff Ruland (very interested), Manhattan’s Bobby Gonzalez, Hofstra’s Tom Pecora and Davidson’s Bob McKillop among others.

Meanwhile, halfway down the page from a March 15th post by Andy:

Officials at N.C. State laughed when ESPN.com called to check on some wild rumor that Herb Sendek could be out. No truth to it, and we got an e-mail back detailing Sendek’s solid ACC numbers. Sendek has a 28-20 ACC record the last three seasons; only Duke and North Carolina have better league records. The Wolfpack have been to five straight NCAAs, which is unheard of in Raleigh. Unfortunately, he’s always compared to Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams.

NC State officials laughing at the prospect of a coaching change for the advancement of North Carolina State University…very sad.

The telling part of this is an AD that has some backbone and confidence. We do not have that luxury in Raleigh. We have someone who is afraid of criticism and when criticized bites back with comments like lunatic fringe.

I know one day he will be gone but will our athletic program be totally decimated when that day arrives?

Makes one almost want to cry – a small, private Jesuit school in the ugly part of New Jersey is allowed to have higher expectations for athletics than NC State. Pure insanity.

I bet that “laugh” had a Jethro-esque, “HOO-WHEEEE” quality at the end.

he does not have even one recruit coming in for next season.

I am not defending, but the two cases are not as similar as some might think.

“I am not defending, but the two cases are not as similar as some might think.”

I agree. HE kicked OUR mediocre coach’s ASS on our floor – and HE is the one who gets fired. I tell you, it’s a droll old world. As Beo said, “HOOOOO-WHEEEE!!”

When the national media is taking it’s constant shots at our fan base for wanting ourselves rid of this curse of mediocrity, why doens’t the obvious step to the front: NO ONE WANTS THIS GUY. You would that if he was so successful in such a tough environment that someone/anyone would show some interest, but NO ONE WANTS THIS GUY. Will the curse ever end?

“Sendek has a 28-20 ACC record the last three seasons; only Duke and North Carolina have better league records”

Sendek’s sycophants come running with another worhtless excuse for a statistic that proves nothing.

It is so sad that a coach that worked Herb gets fired while he continues to make millions.

    HOOOOOOOOOOOO-WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE

BJD95: How is Seton Hall firing Orr even remotely similar to us firing Herb Sendek?

I am not sure that I follow your statement.

Well, I did it, I sent a generous donation to the NCSU Alumni Association.

Until the Sendek issue is resolved with a new coach (and possible a new AD), Any solicitations from the WP club goes into “File 13”.

    Suck on that one Fowler!
