Cut Lee Off – Help Your SCHOOL

With all our hysteria about continuing athletic mediocrity and inept athletic leadership at our alma mater, we sometimes forget that that we graduated from North Carolina State University. And NC State is not a football team or a basketball team, but an institution of higher learning. It is, in short, your school.

So, if you want to make a statement about the basketball program and help your school at the same time, why not take your money from Herb and Lee’s outstretched paws and donate the same amount to the NC State educational department/college that conferred your degree – i.e., stiff Jethro and fund CHASS?

“Whatchew mean, you is givin’ yer money fer book-larnin?”

Your support is certainly needed. For example, I had lunch with my former advisor from the English Department the other day. I learned that almost a THIRD of the teaching positions in the English Department have been cut since I graduated in 1991. If you are a CHASS alumnus, your department might have experienced similar problems.

That’s a disgrace. If you a reading this and have a job doing something other than selling apples, you know that your degree delivers as promised. Can Herb and Jethro make the same claim? Of course not – at least not with a shred of credibility.

I stress that your contribution should be to your college/department and specifically limited to its operations. Also, while I’d originally rejected the notion of contributing to the Alumni Association, recent discussions on that subject have convinced me that this entity too would be worthy of support consideration.

So, before you pay for still more athletic futility and athletic director arrogance, consider donating that money to your old department or consider joining the Alumni Association. Either way, keep your money away from athletics until we have an Athletic Director who takes some note of fan concerns. Your money will be more appreciated and certainly will be put to better use.

NC State, remember? Your school.

By the way, damned good post by Sammy Kent.

“SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO AVOID COMPETING EITHER IN THE RECRUITING WARS OR ON THE COURT WITH HIS SCHOOL’S BIGGEST RIVALS”

    That’s a bit of a stretch don’t you think

On one hand, one could look at this post as if you are advocating hurting that which you say to love.

On the other hand, it could be seen as you advocating “tough love.”

Personally, I believe the latter, tough love. If one disagrees with the direction of a given product, they should not be required to pay for it. This is true of green beans in the grocery store, it certainly is very true of season tickets for the Carolina Hurricanes, and it should be true with NC State athletics as well. In short, if you do not like the direction, vote with your dollars nd let them (Purcell and Fowler) know why you did what you did.

As far as that goes, some people have already done just that. I lowered my WPC giving to the minimum that I need to maintain my LTRs, and I told them in no uncertain terms I would not be filling out the 100″% charitable match form that my company offers. Why should I? After all, I get labelled a “lunatic” for daring disagree with the direction (or lack thereof) of the most important athletic program at NCSU.

I own equity shares in a number of companies, and two have a sizable number (for me, a middle class guy) of shares. Annually, these companies hold a stockholder’s meeting, and if one is reasonable and persistent, they can get on the agenda, albeit for a short time, to express concerns to management — and management is forced to listen to me in public. They are under no obligation to heed my advice, nor should they be, but they are required to at least listen. As a “stockholder” in NCSU athletics, it seems we are not even given that. Sure, you can talk to Lee Fowler, etc., but it is private and he can go into Lee-speak and feather you off of the phone call almost as fast as Adam Gold can on his sports yackfest every afternoon on the radio. Big difference, say I, and it makes more sense to put money where it is more effective.

^ I see your point. I look at it as watering the damaged part of a plant (the CHASS donation) and trimming back the out of control, wild portion (athletics under Lee) that is otherwise underperfoming (no blooms).

I’m in the “need to finish paying off LTR’s to keep my seats/investment” so I can’t drop my donations to the athletic department. It would be unwise to drop the LTR’s after paying half the amount I owe.

^^^Tough love is the proper way to view this I believe.

We are recruiting a lot of the guys UNC and Duke have been recruiting. We recruited Shavlik Randolph and Melchionni. Melchionni chose to walk-on at Duke instead of accepting a scholarship to NC State. We all know the Shavlik story.

As far as UNC, we recruited R. Terry. UNC offered at the very last minute when Terry was about to commit to NC State. Terry chose UNC.

However, Herb did recently get Chris Wright who was being recruited by Duke but had not been offered. He is also recruiting Julian Vaughn who is being recruited by UNC.

Sad to say but I think the only way to express my concerns with the althletics program is to withhold any/all contributions.
In the past I was a member of the WC but not with Herb at the helm of the basketball program.

Note that Melchionni is the son of a Duke BB star from the past. So there is a bit of bias there on his part.

I dropped my WPC membership, cut up the card, and sent it to them LAST YEAR. I’ve seen enough of Herb. It’s not about not hurting little Herbie’s feelings. It’s about what’s best for NCSU. What’s best for NCSU is for Herb to take a hike.

Until there dent in the revenue, there will be no change made. I did what I can…and if that doesn’t help, then I’ve saved some money. Herb will NEVER get another dime of my money. Period.

Since Andy thought Mr. Kent’s statement was “a bit of a stretch,” I suggest the sentence be slightly altered (If I may, Sammy.). If Mr. Kent’s statement had been “… concocted a coaching and recruiting strategy which does not allow NC State to successfully compete in the recruiting wars or on the court,” I think we could all agree. The key word is “successfully.” Perhaps it’s just bad luck that we can’t seem to get the same calibre of players as the top teams in the league year in and year out. I think not. After ten years, Simmons is the closest thing we have had to a real number 5 guy. Where is the first real point guard? It’s Catch-22. The real “hot shots” are turned off by the weird rhetoric Herb spews on his system and his personal values. We’re talking top knotch guys who want to play in a system that will showcase their skills on both ends of the court. As long as Herb is in place, we won’t attract those type of players, but if some quirk of fate allowed two or three to come, he would structure them into mediocrity in a couple of short years. It’s swagger man. It’s X’s and O’s. It’s leadership and gravitas. It’s being able to tear a player down and build him back up if need be. It’s not being afraid to say (as Roy did to a group of freshmen) “We have the only team in the country that is capable of coming into Cameron Indoor Stadium and whipping Duke.” That is by no stretch Herb!

What’s best for the student athletes is to get rid of Fowler & Herb so they have a chance to have good coaches who are fun to play for & know how to win championships every now & then!

  13. class of '74 03/29/2006 at 6:07 AM #

    ^Absolutely!

  14. Cardiff Giant 03/29/2006 at 8:58 AM #

Yes, I want to make clear that whatever you do with your money, don’t give it to athletics under Lee Fowler. If you are stuck with LTR payments, simply give the bare minimum and TELL them that you are making this payment under protest.

  15. NCSU'79 03/29/2006 at 9:38 AM #

I’ve already made a generous donation to Alumni Association and all future WP Club solicitations will go into the trash.

Remeber the Fowler/Sendek motto …” Winning is not important, how much money you can make losing is….”

“If you are walking in the woods and you suspect you are going down the wrong path do you continue down that path? Do you say to yourself if I will just stay patient everything will work itself out in time? Is that your answer?”

Careful with this analogy. All the best hikes I’ve been on have started this way. 😉
