Last athletics season, UNC-Chapel Hill bested Duke University in the two institutions’ annual all-sports battle — the “Carlyle Cup”. The Carlyle Cup is a multi-sport competition between Carolina and Duke where the two schools compete in 23 sports and divide 26 total points.
NC State does not have a similarly structured, formal competition with any school, let alone schools of the athletic prowess of North Carolina and Duke. And, this is probably a great thing for the Athletics Director that is in charge of the #51 athletics program in the country.
NC State and UNC-CH field programs in 23 different athletics programs. Last year, an NC State internet message board community kept track of NC State and Carolina’s head to head athletics battles, including tournament battles. (Interesting that a similar project has not been conducted this season?)
Their research, complemented by some fact checking from StatefansNation, indicates that last athletics season the schools battled head to head on 45 different occassions across all sports. Of the 45 battles:
* NC State beat Carolina or finished ahead of the Heels in a Championship format (like golf or track) only 14 times.
* Of those 14 “wins”, 5 were in golf, teams match up often in tournaments. Men’s golf finished ahead of Carolina twice, but behind the Heels on four other occassions. Women’s golf bested Carolina 3 times.
* Carving golf from the equation, State bested Carolina in 9 of 34 match-ups.
* Carolina took at least one battle from NC State in EVERY SPORT except Men’s Cross Country and Rifling (where we only battled a single time in each sport).
