RPI Update

One of the interesting things about graphing the RPI rank through the season is to see trends over time…but there are smaller details that also stand out. For instance, it took three wins to overcome the drop after the home loss to Seton Hall. It only took two wins to overcome the road loss to GT. Which brings us to the main point of this update, State has matched its highest RPI ranking of the season….heading into the biggest week of the season (so far).

UMd and Alabama both had big wins on Sat after stumbling mid-week. Thus State’s record vs the RPI Top-50 still stands at 4-4…just like it has for every update since Alabama broke into the Top-50. That will change for better or worse this week.

Standings at kenpom.com

Even with the home win on Sat, Maryland has been generally trending downward since about 1/20. Maryland is 2-5 over the last several weeks and 5-7 since the cupcakes ran out at the first of Jan. That is not a good resume to have heading into Selection Sunday.

We haven’t really mentioned FSU at all this year…and it’s high time to point out that they have been trending upward all month. To get an at-large bid, FSU will have to overcome a number of obstacles (in addition to their remaining opponents):
– OOC SOS ranked #309
– 0-5 vs RPI Top-50

So we have two teams that need as many wins as possible, meeting in Tallahassee on Wed. The loser of this game will probably max out at an 8-8 conference record…and that probably won’t be good enough for either of these teams.

Has anyone seen a SOS INSIDE the conference, considering that the round-robin is dead?

I like that we’re up to 12 on kenpom’s site.

I have only seen an OOC SOS and an overall SOS on any site.

While it would be interesting to see a conference SOS…it is beyond any team’s control. It would be interesting to know which of the bottom eight played the most games against the top 4.

Maryland and FSU for sure have the best shots of the bubble teams ATPIT. As you mentioned they have to play each other once yet, so one of them is probably going to be much better off than the other come Tournament week. Both teams’ SOS numbers are poor, but they will be in good position to get some redemption at the new and expanded LRI, even with an 8-8 record. There are always teams playing themselves in and out of the NCAAs in the conference tournaments. Even with our win over WFU last year, we were the lowest at large seed, which tells me that we might not have made it except for teams like Notre Dame playing themselves out by losing in the first round of their conference tourneys.
