RPI Update

Well, that was much better…and State got a bigger RPI jump than I expected from a home win. State still stands at 4-4 against the RPI Top-50 with one more warm-up game in B’burg before facing BC and UNC at home next week.

I classified the bubble teams strictly on the historical trends. If the season ended today, I would expect BC to get an at-large bid and the rest of the teams to head to the NIT.

Maryland keeps hanging around based on their RPI ranking…..but their ranking is steadily dropping as the conference losses continue to climb. They are going to run out of “Mulligans” soon…..real soon

UNC overcame a first-half scare to maintain their ranking.

I suspect that the BC and UVa message boards are all heated up this morning about the evils of the RPI. Both teams went munching on a little late-season OOC snack….and it shows. In fact, BC is 2-0 over the last two games and their RPI ranking has dropped after each win. UVa’s little home romp against Longwood didn’t help them either.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMMMM……

GT, WF, and Clemson all have more wins against the RPI Top-50 than:

On the flip side, Florida State went up four spots after taking their only beat down of the year!

Va Wolf – Your list is “if the tourney was held today” – correct? The only area where I differ is not having Miami on the bubble. If it’s held today, I’d also have BC in the “IN” category. Big win last night – the silly thing about the RPI is that victory was the same as if we’d heaved in a shot from half court at the last second…but Kenpom takes that into account and we are probably 17 or 19 in his – so all is coming out in the wash. I do hope someone from the middle of the pack – FSU, Miami, UMd or UVa gets it together. I guess out of that group, I’d like Miami to emerge.

Also, for all the talk about the ACC being down, it says a lot about the strength, athleticism and depth of the conference that Wake is 1-10. I think in the Big 10, Pac 10, or Big 12, Wake is hovering around the .500 mark – probably south of it, but it would at least be in reach. I think Wake would be suffering a similar fate in the Big East, but there are no South Florida’s in the ACC!

A win by Miami tonight at BC would shake things up nicely, and likely move them into the “bubble” category.

^^ Lots of NIT-caliber teams in the ACC this year. But really only 2 teams (Duke, State) with Sweet Sixteen potential. And only 4 that really belong in the dance (Duke, State, UNC, BC).

BJ – I don’t know. I think UNC-Ch can play w/ anyone. Of course, Tyler won’t be allowed to hatchet his way through the NCAA tourney field the way he’s allowed to in conference. (Don’t get me wrong, he was getting mugged at times last night, but he gives as good as he gets.)

UNC is the kind of team that is definitely getting the most out of what they have – and it makes them a #20-25 caliber unit. Those kinds of teams don’t make deep tourney runs. Plus, if you shut down Hansbrough, there’s nobody else really capable of beating you.

BJD95- Yea, but I think they can beat 2 teams to get to the Sweet 16 – especially if they get a break or 2. (Let’s say they’re a 6 or 7 seed and the high seed loses their opening game.)

You can put BC and UM on either side of their respective line. I started to wait and do the RPI update after tonight’s game…because it will clarify both teams position w.r.t the dreaded bubble. After seeing the surprisingly nice boost in State’s RPI, I decided to do something this morning.

No BCS school has been denied a bid with a 37 ranking….but they have been denied with 38. BC only has one win against RPI Top 50…so I put them on the bubble and added what I hoped was a clarifying note.

As far as UM goes, no team with a ranking of 75 has gotten an at-large bid over the last several years. With Duke looming this weekend….UM may be permanently “out” by Sunday.

I think UNC and BC are both potential Sweet 16 teams also. Both teams have been playing really well.

I will be mildly surprised if BC doesn’t lose in the first round. I think a good mid-major is very likely to beat the Eagles, and quite possibly blow them out.
