Deja Vu All Over Again

This will be the fourth year out of the last five that State finishes the regular season among the top four teams of the conference. However, three of those “high finishes” have an eery similarity:

I just wish that this constant or steady improvement of the basketball program that I keep hearing about would show up in the W/L record against good teams. It’s not too late to make this year something special…something worth remembering. But it will take a lot better effort and a lot better coaching than we’ve seen this week.

SHORT RPI UPDATE
I will try and do the normal RPI update tomorrow because I want to include today’s games in the discussion. After yesterday’s loss, State has dropped to #35. (This is three spots lower than State dropped after the Seton Hall loss.) While State is still on solid ground wrt to the NCAAT Bubble, they are alot closer than I would like to see.

I am just curious, what was the breakdown for 2004?

  2. class of '74 02/26/2006 at 11:00 AM #

I’m somewhat surprised we didn’t fall a bit further in the RPI. As far as the finish to this season goes, we looked like some whipped pups at the conclusion to yesterdays game. They need a miracle to go far in either the ACCT or NCAA judging by their body language. Another lackluster season of better than average but no banners. I can hear the cries of WTNY!

I don’t know what you were looking for in 2004, but the head-to-head records are listed in the entry RPI and the ACC

Scroll down to the third table.

^Thank you. I take your comments as a badge of honor!

If you can honestly look in the mirror after the two games we played last week and tell yourself that we have a chance of an ACCT or reaching the sweet sixteen then you my friend are out of your mind!

Class of ’74’s comments are right on the money. The “pathetic quitters” are those who are content with Sendick’s mediocrity, just letting UNC & Duke completely dominate us and basically giving up on winning ACCT or NCAA titles. REAL State fans are tired of the same results year after year.

I too am tired of the false State fans who accept this mediocre coach and AD. however:

Can you run a statistical comparison with State’s ACC regular season results during Valvano’s career and then those with Herb without the watering down of BC, Miami and VT.

I think all of the so-called progress has come from the dilution of the schedual. We play Duke and Md once but play Miami and VT twice-hardly an even trade.

I think the problem is that of failed expectations. Most of us had hoped that this “best team of Herbs yet” could finally beat UNC and drive a stake in the hearts of the other teams this year at the close of the season. Just like with our football program, the letdown has been a lot to deal with. Mind you, we’re all State fans with strong support for the program(s), the question is whether or not our program(s) are at the level we all expect. After all the encouraging signs this basketball season, it seems like we’re back to where we were over the past decade and a half – spinning our wheels as a mediocre program. And yes, real NCSU fans find that frustrating.

All due respect VA…but if we’re going to lose and finish in x place at end of season, I would prefer to l;ose to teams ahead of me. Of course…I’d prefer not to lose at all, but I’m not sure this has any real meaning, other than to show we finished in x place.

I think crpagpalp was asking about 2004 to see if it happened every year, or just the one’s you selected…2005 would be nice too, but it really doesn’t matter…we lost x number of games…we lost to x number of top 5 teams during the season, which(obviously) finished ahead of us in the conference standings.

I’m just sick to death that we lost to BC and gave up our chance to finish 2nd place all by ourselves…Herb and players really make it tough for us sunshiners 🙂 We better play well in both tournaments, or my outlook of this program will change drastically for next season…Damnit!

I’ll go camp out at Rick Barnes home.

Good chance this team may not make tourney. They are going to lose to WF and first round in the ACC tourney. RPI of about 58 when it is all said and done.

“I think all of the so-called progress has come from the dilution of the schedual. We play Duke and Md once but play Miami and VT twice-hardly an even trade.”

And you say we’re stupid? Are you talking about the success we’ve had the last 5 years in conference is because of diluted ACC schedule, or are you only talking about this season? Progress measured against your peers is progress…one season means nothing, unless it was a total flop…this hasn’t been a total flop, just not as good as we hoped, and expected after the first half of conference schedule…BTW…I agree that this season, we had an easier schedule than UNC and a couple of others.

Progress is usually determined over a period of time, not one season. Progress can be looked at on different levels, based on certain achievements during that period of time…it fluctuates and most of the time isn’t a straight line. Kind of like what Prosser and GW are going through right now.

HAve we made progress???YES>>>anyone with half a brain would a agree…is it enough to support Herb after 10 years?…after the BC game, and the way we lost that game, I’m not completely sure.

  12. VaWolf82 02/26/2006 at 4:37 PM #

but I’m not sure this has any real meaning

It’s really quite simple…once again, State mops up on the weak sisters and folds when a decent team shows up.

  13. BJD95 02/26/2006 at 4:51 PM #

PACDADDY – to me at least, it suggests that the team has a “ceiling” and is some additional evidence that future titles and Final Fours aren’t around the corner. Because, to win an ACCT or make a Final Four, you’ll need to beat multiple good teams. It is indeed nice to consistently beat weaker opponents, but that won’t take us where we want to go. It will make us (all together now) “consistently pretty good.”

  14. VaWolf82 02/26/2006 at 5:45 PM #

Is that the same as “stuck on pretty good”?

  15. class of '74 02/27/2006 at 7:11 AM #

^I’d say it’s stuck on 3rd or 4th. Kind of like the view of a sled dog. If you aren’t in the lead the view never changes and it’s not very pretty either!

  16. Rick 02/27/2006 at 9:19 AM #

“Because, to win an ACCT or make a Final Four, you’ll need to beat multiple good teams.”

    Ding, Ding

You cannot win a tournament without beating good teams.
This why many think a championship is not goign to happen.
