Hoos Top Heels

Just two weeks ago we were talking about new Virginia coach, Dave Leitao. So it doesn’t surprise me that after wins over Virginia Tech and Carolina, Virginia is above .500 in ACC play for the first time since the 2002-03 season. (Obviously, Leitao inherited a lot at Virginia).

The Times Dispatch shared that Leitao made an adjustment during the game that played an integral role in Virginia’s success:

In the second half, Leitao switched to a motion offense to combat the Heels’ aggressive perimeter defense, and the move paid huge dividends. The Cavaliers’ big men — all but invisible offensively in the first half — suddenly began hurting the Heels inside. Cain and Mikalauskas combined for 13 points after intermission.

How is this for a stat — even with Pete Gillen at the helm…Virginia has won six of its past seven games against UNC-CH at University Hall. Wow!! For the record, State has won two of its past seven games against UNC-CH at the RBC Center.

For at least the next month, many Wolfpackers will continue to scratch our collective heads wondering, “how Carolina could lost at home to Miami and on the road to a Virginia team that was the consensus last place choise in this year’s ACC and beat NC State by double figures?” Simultaneously, we also will continue to be harassed as the Tarheels with whom we work as they continue to own bragging rights over us. I’ve looked all around my office for some Georgia Tech fans to accost and have failed to locate any.

Maybe….just maybe….some games do mean more than others?

Come on, Jeff. Don’t you know that the season is a marathon, not a sprint? It’s only one game of many that come fast and furious during ACC play. The Carolina game doesn’t mean anymore than the Clemson or BC game. Besides, according to our illustrious AD, who ‘knows basketball’, we can’t expect to compete against Carolina and Dook. They have been too good for too long.

The UNC game definitely means more. But I can accept losing to them frequently if and only if we do lots of damage in the post-season to make up for it. Sendek definitely needs to improve markedly in at least one of those aspects if he wants enthusiastic fan support (rather than mere acceptance).

Leitao is looking like the 2005-06 version of the 2004-05 Seth Greenberg.

Our overall ACC record and post-season performance is what matters to me. I would like to win the UNC games, but I focus on our seasons as a whole so the individual games don’t mean a whole lot by themselves.

Personally, UNC fans don’t bother me. They certainly try though.

Wasn’t there an article after UNC’s win over Va Tech talking about how winning that game showed how great of a coach he is? I wonder if the same author will offer praise after back-to-back losses. Note that I think Roy is a great coach, but thought it was completely ridiculous to bring it up after a win in Blacksburg.

“Our overall ACC record and post-season performance is what matters to me.”
And yet Herb has been subpar in those two areas as well.
    Go figure.

Jeff, your best shot is this year. You guys have a very good team and we were very lucky to beat you. I was hoping to see the look of despair on the Cameron Crazies faces the other night. The Pack did NOT back down and that will pay off in the tourneys…… Great blog site!

    ^I think that was sarcasm.

Props to Leitao…when it was looking like Herb was possibly going to jump ship last year I remember thinking he would be a good target. Not surprising that he’s doing a great job. That was a hideous game to watch though – I was surprised that UVa got away with as much physical play as they did.

TVP Take a compliment. State does have a very good team……….enjoy it!!!

If Herb beats UNC in Raleigh, then won’t he be 5-5 against UNC over the last 10 games?

If NC State is a higher seed than UNC in this year’s ACC tournament, then that will be the 4th time in 5 seasons with three of those seasons coached by Roy Williams.

I guess it is all in how you look at things.

Oh that was a basketball game last night, I thought I had tuned in to a hockey game. It would be nice if the officiating could be consistent from night to night in this league. Hand checking, bumping and pushing were at one time actually called fouls!

  12. Red Rooster 01/20/2006 at 1:17 PM #

Hand checking, bumping and pushing are still called at most places except against the home teams at UNC and Duke! It is rare you will ever see the boxscores listing the visiting team at these two locations with more free-throws than the home teams.

^ No truer post has ever existed.

    I could not agree more!!!!

If Herb beats UNC in Raleigh, he will be 6-16 against them in his tenure and one for his last six. If we finish ahead of Carolina this year in the RPI, it will be only the 2nd time in a decade that we finished ahead of them.

All in how you look at things.

Q: Why is it, do you think, that most people tend to look at UNC as so much more successful than NC State in the last five years?

A: Men are judged by their greatest achievements.

I guess it is all how you choose to look at things.

  14. Herb 01/20/2006 at 2:09 PM #

The Carolina game matters more than other games because:

    A) Programs are judged by the performances people on a national level see, i.e. vs. UNC not GT or UVA.

    B) I work with a bunch of UNC grads, not GT or UVA grads.

    C) State competes for students and funds primarily with UNC, not GT or UVA.

I don’t disagree at all and I understand that people think UNC is a better program. They are a better program.

Do you propose that we fire Herb Sendek?

The glass isn’t half-full or half-empty. The glass is at 50% capacity.

  17. Mr. O 01/20/2006 at 3:11 PM #

Not to mention that there are literally hundreds of divisions 1 coaches that have finished in front of UNC in the RPI two or less times in the last 16 years.

I suppose we can add Dave Leitao to the long list of ACC coaches that are absolutely positively going to move their programs ahead of NCSU. Ten-year contracts for everyone! (Oh, well, maybe that didn’t work out so well last time.)

In the ACC we have “ABC” fans. It also seems that we have “ABHS” fans as well.

  19. Jeff 01/20/2006 at 4:59 PM #

Because we want to beat Carolina we aren’t Herb Sendek fans?

Because we are happy that Virginia has beaten Carolina 6 out its last 7 on it home court we believe that UVa will be moving ahead of NC State in basketball?

Those are some very interesting conclusions. Not sure where they come from…but, you are entitled to ‘think’ any way that you want.

“5:36: Somebody tell Evtimov this isn’t his Harlem Globetrotters tryout, for fuck’s sake.”

I love it. Heh. i have noticed lately his baby hook and slick shots have not been falling. But neither have his 3s. I saw the comment also about his “stroke”, so maybe he is in some sort of slump. Also Dan Bonner said (commentator) he should go to the basket with authority. Not really his game though, he’s a finesse player, always has been. And didn’t he lose something like 20 pounds for this season? I would think he would be less effective down in the post/paint with a lighter frame. I dunno, having an excellent passer down low in the last 2 years was definitely a good thing. A “go-pack” pre-season quote said something along the lines of him losing the weight and being more mobile, moving from forward to guard, since that is where his professional career will be.

Cheers to him but maybe it has been an adjustment. All i know is he is one the best sharp-shooters in the ACC. Although i did not pick up on it while watching the game, saw some comments on his defense. That’s definitely one way to make up for poor shooting, good D.
