Bowl TV Schedule

Twenty-eight bowls is too many, but here is the schedule nontheless. There is not much reason to watch before Colorado tries to recover from embarrassment against Clemson on the 27th. Of the fourteen teams bowling before then, only two are from BCS conferences. Of the 42 teams playing on or after the 27th, only 5 are not from BCS conferences. (Note: Here I’m using the BCS definition which includes the Big East.

As expected, the best games are crammed into the 2nd with all 6 games worth watching that day. Otherwise, Oregon vs. OU and LSU vs. Miami are the best non-BCS games.

Of course, the Rose Bowl is the game everyone wanted. No one can question that these two teams look better than everyone else. Unfortunately, its also hard to question that the Pac 10 and Big 12 are the two worst BCS conferences from top to bottom. In fact, both team’s closest games came versus out of conference opponents – UT vs. OSU and USC versus ND. USC’s second closest game was against an 8-4 mid-major. Each team throttled their best in conference foe (over Texas Tech by 35 & over Oregon by 32). As we all know, the second best conference foes (Colorado and UCLA) were even worse. No one else in either conference is worth mentioning. However, regardless of the regular season competition, both these teams are loaded, especially on offense, and this should be a fun game to watch.

You are absolutely right, TF. I would love to see Texas and USC have to wade through the minefield against battle-tested SEC and Big 12 teams before getting to square off against each other. Alas, it’s not to be.

And is it just me, or are the bowl matchups especially bad this year? I don’t have much desire to watch ANY of the early matchups, and (ask my wife and she’ll vouch for this), I’ll watch almost ANYTHING to satisfy my football Jones.

Its definitely not just you. There are some very bad games and bad teams this year.

“And is it just me, or are the bowl matchups especially bad this year?”

Oh, indeed, they are rank. Here’s part of the problem – a lot of the traditional powers are mediocre this year…Michigan and Nebraska back into bowl games, FSU is a shell of it’s former self. Tennessee missed the bowls all together. UF isn’t what many were thinking they’d be.

I really think the biggest problem this year is the mediocrity of the Big 12. While the SEC was down – by their lofty standards – UGa, LSU, Bama and Auburn are still strong and worthy teams. And who doesn’t want to watch a Steve Spurrier college football team. OTOH, the Big 12 has Tejas – and then, pansy killer Texas Tech. Oklahoma, Colorado and Nebraska are mediocre at best. Kansas State – usually at least an attractive team – didn’t qualify for bowls.

As a result, 2 of those bowl games that usually yield 2 of the most exciting match-ups: the Alamo Bowl and the Holiday Bowl – are total duds.

In addition, once again, the BCS has tried their best to create a schedule which creates a strong desire for playoffs amongst even the die-hard college football fans: I’m talking about Penn State (10-1) vs. FSU (8-4) and WVu vs. UGa….I would love to see a Penn State-UGa game – 2 teams whom I think currently own the 3rd and 4th overall seedings.

While this isn’t as bad as the outright travesty of the Utah-Pittsburgh matchup Auburn-VaTech matchup, there were better match-ups to be had out there.
