A Job Well Done

Other than the snarled traffic on Edwards Mill Road, it was a very good night at the RBC Center. It’s been a very long time since a Wolfpack revenue sports team earned a standing ovation from the home crowd – but that particular drought ended tonight. Herb Sendek’s cool, composed squad disposed of a solid George Washington team in assassin-like fashion, 79-58.

Earlier this afternoon, I couldn’t shake the feeling that tonight could be a defining moment for Herb Sendek. Obviously, alot of hard work lies ahead – but the Colonials loomed as a litmus test of sorts. It was exactly the kind of game – all together now – that Sendek teams of the past would lose. But tonight, the outcome was never in doubt. Considering the sloppy state of affairs among other ACC programs (tonight alone, Virginia Tech lost to Old Dominion, and Clemson fell to an Elon squad that entered the game at 2-9), the opportunity is fantastic. It will be interesting to see if programs more familiar with NC State can solve the Wolfpack’s defense better than the out of conference teams did – if not, you could very well be looking at a 12+ ACC win team.

As Jeff noted in the pre-season, it would be very interesting to see how Herb Sendek fared without (1) Julius Hodge; and (2) Larry Hunter. So far, so good on both counts. Hodge’s former teammates have all stepped up their games and assumed part of the load that Hodge so often carried by himself. And without his security blanket of sorts, Herb Sendek has coached with more aggression and confidence. Case in point – we all (fairly, in my view) have pointed out Sendek’s poor history of halftime adjustments. But tonight, Sendek caught GW totally off guard by staring the second half abandoning the perimeter to feed Big Ced – again, again, and again. It was a brilliant move, and it paid off handsomely.

Again, I don’t want to get ahead of myself – basketball is a tournament sport, and it is possible that this team will crash and burn at the end, much like the 2004 team. But subjectively, I don’t see it. This team plays with more poise, composure, and mental toughness than any other Sendek squad. Those traits are directly attributable, IMHO, to good coaching.

Don’t read this as a mea culpa or an apology. I don’t think my past criticism of Sendek was ever unfair, and I stand by it. And despite what some people say, it’s not about liking someone – it’s about winning, and demonstrating a championship mentality. After Philip Rivers left NC State, Chuck Amato has shown us next to nothing. In the brief time since Julius Hodge departed, Herb Sendek has shown us a glimpse of something potentially very special. Let’s all hope the 2006 portion of the mens’ basketball season is as good as the 2005 part.

A great result tonight. This really could turn out to be a special year for Herb and it’s about time. Congratulations!!!

Nice entry…It really appears this program has arrived, and appears to be extremely stable for years to come. The type of student-athletes we have in this program should make us proud. It’s a program built the right way.

“mental toughness”…those are the key words to this team. Of course, you still need the talent to back it up, but we don’t fall apart, even when calls don’t go our way.

Just think…we have a MC D’s AA and a borderline MC D’s AA in Fells seating on the bench. We have a solid class of recruits coming in and a transfer who may better than anyone on the entire team waiting in the wings.

How can anyone be negative about this program and not be laughed off the internet?…of course…I’m assuming this team continues to play well. The depth will make us consistent…something Herb hasn’t had since he’s been here. I still contend during certain times in his tenure, untimely injuries/attrition held us back, but Coach Sendek is also a better coach than he was 5 years ago. For a 43 year old year, 5 years is an eternity to gain experience at the highest level.

That was an impressive display tonight. I almost wish we could play the holes next while we’re firing on all cylinders.

Unless GW is just entirely overrated (as “Top 10” Syracuse was a few years ago), this win will serve us well for seeding in the NCAA’s.

Kudos to the staff & squad!!!!

Congratulations to the Pack! They totally confused and out hustled a veteran team full of athletic players. Sendek’s Wolfpack team has made every offense it has faced look sloppy and sluggish, and that is no coincidence. Thank goodness Herb is finally getting some credit. It’s about time!

was able to get tickets outside…

was a solid effort, started shakey but midway through the first half until the last seconds ticked away state was poised, in control, and executing efficiently. good to see that Brackman refuses to be pushed around.. in one sequence backing down the defender, following up with a post move. Grant still seems “erratic” but contributed. also I’ve noticed in the last couple games Bennerman taking the largest percentage of shots, but not as much as a marksman as some of the others on the squad… so far hasn’t really hurt us, and no doubting he was a force in the Miami game. I think perhaps some of it is shot selection. hopefully gradually Evtimov and Atsur’s bb IQ will leak into Bennerman, Bethel, Grant. the latter three definitely provide much needed athleticism.

…one of those games we are used to seeing the pack drop in the previous years. but there is something special about this year’s team…fundamentally sounder, better talent-wise, and distributed attack. of course it’s early, but damn is this a much better team then we are used to seeing (and it feels good to witness it).

  6. Fred McCulloch 12/31/2005 at 1:01 AM #

This TEAM is better than last year because they don’t wait around for Hodge to make a play. If you’re preparing to play us, who do you try to stop/contain?

  7. BJD95 12/31/2005 at 9:32 AM #

I would change a word in packbackers’ comment:

Thank goodness Herb is finally EARNING some credit. It’s about time!

Also, from what I see, Atsur’s basketball IQ is significantly higher than everyone else’s – including Evtimov’s (the rest of the team is above average in that respect, but Atsur’s is off the charts). I really like watching that kid play, and he almost never makes a bad decision with the ball. I think it’s Atsur’s personality that is really rubbing off on the rest of the team. IMHO, Atsur and Big Ced are the only two “indispensable” players on the team.

  8. JeremyHyatt 12/31/2005 at 12:15 PM #

I’m not so sure about that. I had been of the perspective that Evtimov and Atsur are around the same level in the IQ respect, but it shows up differently as they play different positions, i.e. Atsur runs the points so he’s more visible. also if you’re basing off last game, Evtimov didn’t have his shining-est game (but of course its not a one man show here at State). Throw into the mix that Atsur is looking to score more this year, (which is fine by me, i rather see him and Evtimov take most of those shots as they are more consistent behind the arc than the others) and he becomes that much more visible. I see Atsur with the same contributions as a kid named Justin Gainey: solid as a rock from the point, but better 3 point shooting and better passing skillset. maybe not as tough defensively, but his is the “engin” of the team (excuse me i couldn’t help it).

No doubt that Ced is indispensible, he diversifies the attack. Also Brackman has shown very key giving us the necessary boost off the bench. Getting back to Evtimov; Bennerman may be the self-proclaimed leader of the team, but Evitmov is in many ways the captain of the ship. He makes the savy move to score when it is needed, he knocks down the basically half-court 3 pointer when there is a drought, and provides an excellent passing touch to make our game more fluid. I think he’s pretty critical also to our success thus far this year, and in the last 2 years.

I got to go to the game last night and here are some random observations:

    – I didn’t know what kind of crowd to expect for the GW game, but I was pleasantly surprised by both the turnout and energy displayed in the first half while the game was close.

    – Has anyone ever seen a less effective zone trap than the one GW used in the second half? When your press ends with the opposing team’s center dunking the ball numerous times, there are problems somewhere.

    – Cedric Simmons is the best post-player State has had in a long time. If CS plays well on both ends of the court against the Williams (Sheldon and Eric), then don’t be surprised if he doesn’t return to Raleigh.

    – Every State fan has to be really happy for Cam this year. I always like to see a player have his best year as a senior and Cam is well on his way. From Hargrave, through being buried on the bench, and finally to starter has to be satisfying for him and his family.

    – From watching the game, there were no significant weaknesses or problem areas that stood out to me. I was happy when the ~10 point lead was pushed to about 20. When GW cut the lead to 12, State responded quickly and pushed the lead back towards 20. I hope that State can continue to put teams away once they have built a good lead.

    – Every State fan has to be a little nervous when only seven players see time in tough games. I’m not pushing for Herb to play players before they are ready, just a little disappointed that the freshmen are not ready/healthy enough to play.

Impressive game last night. Long way to go in the season, but that is one big hurdle cleared with ease. I liked we held them to 20% shooting in the first half and held their big man to an off night. As the ACC continues to flounder, opportunities abound. Just win.

“Thank goodness Herb is finally EARNING some credit. It’s about time!”

I agree 100%. I have always wanted Hebr to suceed but never had the faith that he would. I am started to see it but I want to see some actual accomplishments before I am sold.

  13. scott 01/01/2006 at 2:00 PM #

I agree w/ BJD95 & Rick’s posts in particular. I’ve always been pretty critical of Herb, but so far, he’s done an outstanding job w/this group. In past years, we would have lost to Alabama after blowing a lead on the road & let GW back in the game in the 2nd half. With both b-ball teams winning Friday & the bowl game yesterday, what a GREAT weekend for Wolfpack athletics!

  14. Mr O 01/01/2006 at 4:41 PM #

I can’t remember an NC State team playing that well in a long, long time. Herb has put together a perfect team for him to coach.

We have a complete team with every player capable of dribbling, passing, shooting and defending. I always wondered if Herb’s concept for our program would work. This team may end up being the proof that it can. Recruit versatile, intelligent, unselfish players that can shoot and put them in a system built on interchangeable parts. It all makes sense now that I can see it.

I think what has limited us in the last few years is the lack of an inside presense at both end of the floor and some selfishness of a few players. This team has two potentially dominating inside players and not a single hint of selfishness in a single player. It is all about the team with these guys and Herb Sendek deserves major credit for getting these guys to come together to NC State and then positioning them to win.

I haven’t been this excited about NC State basketball since Herb’s first couple of years.

  15. Jeff 01/03/2006 at 8:55 AM #

^ I echo these comments. We should go 6-2 in the next 8 games and be positioned for Top 10 talk and Top 4 seeding come February. Very exciting!

I (respectfully) don’t understand Pacdaddy’s need to subjectively project into future seasons right now: “It really appears this program has arrived, and appears to be extremely stable for years to come.”

How can you say such a thing with so much conviction? Can’t we just enjoy this season and not falsely proclaim future riches?

What we know to be fact:
    * We lose Ilian Evtimov, Cameron Bennerman & Tony Bethel.
    * Our current freshman are getting no time this year to have experience next year.
    * Next year’s freshman class is generally considered weak…and we don’t play freshmen very much, anyway.
    * Cedric Simmons is really good sophomore. The last really good post player that we had decided to leave after his sophomore season.

It’s not like Herb has some kind of stellar record for huge success on an annual basis; if he did, we wouldn’t argue like we do.

Point is simple – it’s irresponsible and unneccessary to worry about anything other than the potential of THIS YEAR’s basketball team. Let’s try to refrain from overly-subjective (and rosey), sweeping comments about the future. We haven’t won anything yet. Let’s enjoy our journey as we try to finally win something worth crowing about.

  16. Class of '74 01/04/2006 at 4:11 PM #

With the projections of the past two recruiting classes of Duke, UNC and GT we should not be looking past the present season that’s for sure!

  17. PACDADDY 01/07/2006 at 12:16 AM #

“How can you say such a thing with so much conviction?”

I remember having simular questions asked when I said we’d be better the season Hodge came in as a freshman, after losing all those players and Wilkins. I’ve been saying with “conviction” that this program is on the rise. This doesn’t mean that once in a while we have a brief deep (like Maryland last season)…but I’m not the only one that can see a difference in the quality of the recruits, skill level and character.

I strongly feel this program is going up up up…Wright will help recruit blue-chippers…Ferguson maybe as good as Hodge. Looking at his tapes, he looks like a better shooter, ball handler and passer…I don’t know about rebounder. Is he a winner? We’ll see, but NOW he won’t HAVE TO PERFORM every game like Hodge did.

The class coming in will prove to be UNDER-RATED.

“Point is simple – it’s irresponsible and unneccessary to worry about anything other than the potential of THIS YEAR’s basketball team. ”

All due respect to you Jeff…but couldn’t I say the same thing about focusing on the past?…in fact…I think looking at the program now and projecting it’s potential in the future, is far more “responsible” than bringing up old, meaningless stats in order rehash old arguments. NOTE: This isn’t directed at you or VA…just a general statement about what’s “neccessary or responsible”.

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE WITH A POSITIVE EYE, IS FAR MORE RESPONSIBLE AND NECCESSARY THAN LOOKING INTO PAST…it sure doesn’t hurt 😉

    Just my opinion.

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE WITH A POSITIVE EYE, IS FAR MORE RESPONSIBLE AND NECCESSARY THAN LOOKING INTO PAST…it sure doesn’t hurt

Unless you have some qualifications as a prophet (or recruiting expert), why should your view of the future have any value to me?

When you limit your discussion of player additions/subtractions to only NC State and then conclude that State’s program is on the rise, the limited info you use to make your projections make them nearly worthless.

State can have a better team next year (which I don’t think is going to happen)….and still accomplish less. Next year’s team will never play this year’s team, so any comparisons you make in this regard are meaningless. Next year’s team will compete against the other ACC schools. Unless you make an effort to evaluate the talent in the other ACC schools, then your projections will likely be just as worthless as the projections made for the football team annually ever since the Gator Bowl.

As far as the value of looking into the past goes, historical information can not be used to directly predict the future…but there is information there than will have a bearing on the futre…it is just a question of whether we can determine which pieces of info will give us some insight into the future. For example, Herb’s record against Doh is of absolutely no value when projecting how Herb will do against Roy.

One piece of historical info that I think has merit, is the head-to-head coaching records combined with the ACC records from each year. I did this comparison and concluded that Herb ranks behind K, RW, GW, and Skippy (See “RPI and the ACC” linked below) . So unless State has a much better team, I don’t expect for State to do very well against those coaches. When Herb has shown that he can beat those coaches with roughly equal talent, or out-recruit them and consistently have better talent, then I will change my projections of the future.

VA…do you really I care if you agree with me? You, Jeff and a few others are about the only fans that don’t agree with me..why would I care if you do?

“I did this comparison and concluded that Herb ranks behind K, RW, GW, and Skippy (See “RPI and the ACCâ€? linked below) . So unless State has a much better team, I don’t expect for State to do very well against those coaches.”
