NC State To Play ECU 4 Out of The Next 5 Years

Not sure what was newsworthy about this item in the N&O this morning. I thought all of this was released a couple of weeks ago.

East Carolina has adjusted its future scheduling agreements in football with Virginia Tech and N.C. State, athletics director Terry Holland announced Monday.

June’s original agreements featured eight meetings against the Hokies and four against the Wolfpack. The new version adds one game against Tech and two against NCSU. The agreements extend into the 2016 season.

The Pirates and Wolfpack will meet in Raleigh during the 2006, 2009 and 2013 seasons. N.C. State will play at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in 2007, 2010 and 2016.

Also, I wish I could link to the article where Spurrier talked about wanting to play us. It’s been too long ago. I also remember a report stating that ESPN was supposedly trying to set up a few games (imagine that, playing games that NATIONAL TELEVISION would be intereted in!), but don’t remember the nature of the source.

Plus, Spurrier has the requisite “championship mentality.” There’s no freaking way he would be afraid to play NC State b/c “they already play Clemson and the SEC.”

I was at the ECU game last year. Not because I care so much about beating them, but because I go to most NC State football games. There are a lot of NC State fans like me who were also at the game. I did skip the game in Greenville though because the venue doesn’t make sense hence my interestest and preference for only 25% of our contracted games with ECU in Greenville as opposed to 50%.

As it turned out, UNC and USC signed a pure home and home. That would have been a great matchup for us.

BJD hit the key. ESPN/ABC are the fans best hope for quality opponents. If left up to our present admin we will see a constant diet of cupcakes. TV and the dollars they offer is the key.

Mr. O, there are also NC State fans who will go watch us play pretty much anybody in basketball, including the likes of Prairie View and the Southwest Texas School for the Blind. It doesn’t mean that it keeps the fanbase enthused, or that what enthusiasm exists should be taken for granted.

Don’t forget our ACC schedule is upgraded in almost every year going forward and has been the last two years since we don’t play Duke very often. Basketball and football are very different to me because 1 game in football is more of an event for me personally. Therefore, the cupcake games are more enjoyable for me to those in basketball. I have been as hard as anyone on our basketball schedules.

The trips to Ohio St and Austin were great. Fortunately with the new ACC, we get trips to Boston, Blacksburg and Miami as regular opportunities in addition to the traditional ACC schools. I am flying up tomorrow to Boston. This trip was pre-scheduled and was looking more like simply a chance to visit a great city. However, after last weekends win it looks to be more fun since our hopes for a decent season were kept alive.

My ancillary point is that the OOC portion of the schedule is now fully 1/3 of the overall number of games – getting closer to the basketball ratio. The extra game ALREADY virtually assures an extra cupcake game per year. So, why not take the opportunity to make the other 2 OOC games at least relatively attractive and interesting?
