It Was a Very Good Weekend

How sweet it was to experience such a wonderful weekend in Wolfpack Athletics!!

Basketball:
Let’s start on the hardwood since we’ve had plenty of time to discuss football.

===> See, that wasn’t so tough was it? It wasn’t difficult at all to schedule a decently-named team AND get a win. Who cares how poorly Notre Dame played? That’s what happens from game to game. Historically, we’ve scheduled so few interesting non-conference games that we don’t get the pleasure of running into a bad night from one of our opponents that often.

===> I was a little disappointed in The Wolfpacker over the weekend as they stated that NC State’s record against Notre Dame was now 2-3.

Notebook: Notre Dame still leads the overall series with NC State 3-2.

That just didn’t feel right to me, because I remember when I was young beating Notre at least twice in South Bend. A look back and I found 18 and 20 point victories in South bend in 1980 and 1982, respectively; both when Notre Dame was pretty significant on the national map.

I know that the big current trend is to do everything possible to diminish the history of the NC State Basketball program, but let’s at least try to not be like Brett Friendlander and just make up records.

It is not often that we say this, but at least GoPack.com got this one right. They might not have had the television coverage of the game accurate on their website until the week of the game, but at least they got the State-Notre Dame series record correct, “the Pack would improve to 3-4 against Notre Dame in the all-time series.”

===> Unfortunately, my cable box died over Thanksgiving weekend so I did not get to see the second half of the NC State – Notre Dame basketball game. From an excitement perspective, it doesn’t sound like I missed much. I honestly could care less how boring we are as long as we win. It was nice that Notre Dame totally sucked on Saturday night…but it was nicer that we won. I’ll take any of it!! Good work, guys. We are currently on our way of staying OFF of the NCAA Tournament Bubble this year. It is nice to have a little interest in our next game at this point in the season.

Football:
===> I think that we’ve covered Saturday’s game and the resulting bowl situation as it has been evolving.

===> What we didn’t cover as the beauty that of beating Maryland to become bowl eligible. Outside of Carolina, is there a team that should be despised more than the Terps?

Not only have their players physically attacked our band (2 years ago prior to Philip Rivers’ senior day) and generally acted like thugs in their last 2 visits to Carter-Finley…but the “Terps and the Fat Man” have handed us losses on our own turf that have kept us out of the Peach Bowl on two separate occassions. On Saturday, their team ran onto the field (AGAIN) making gestures and engaging the Carter-Finley crowd. None of the players were as cocky (and stupid looking) as Vernon Davis, who stood in front of the fans around the 40 yard line taking mock bows and tipping his hat.

It was a wonderful feeling to keep the Turtles out of a bowl for the second consecutive year and be a part of sending such a clear signal to recruits that their program has stagnated and is in trouble. The Fridge is a super coach, as he proved when he was winning with Mark Duffner’s players. But, we are now seeing the results of top talent shunning the opportunity to play for such an ass hole.

===> Did you know that NC State has led Maryland at halftime in each of Chuck Amato’s previous five seasons? Yet we had compiled a 1-4 record in those games (prior to this weekend)?

===> We also didn’t cover the beauty of Carolina losing and NOT becoming bowl eligible. You probably heard/saw Matt Baker’s comments, but you need to read the comments from our readers (especially from “Eddie”) in this entry. Clarity, facts, and solid analysis always is a bitch to an individual’s dream world. (I also want to use those comments from Eddie and our readers as an example of how solid and sophisticated the discussions are on this blog. Thanks to everyone for participating!)

Happy Anniversary To Us
Can you believe it? This little blog effectively got off the ground one year ago today!! Since then, we have had over 2 million hits and growing all of the time. (Please let yout friends know about us as we have never “pushed” the site for traffic).

It’s a little ironic that this entry included complaints about Fox Sports coverage of ACC Basketball when I posted this entry 365 days ago.

It is long overdue to play games that are at least worth watching. Notre Dame looked horrid but it could have been our defense. Our size seemed to hurt their shooting and they were not able to drive on us.

Anyone see HALF the MD team walk straight from the field and into the Field House WITHOUT shaking hands. So typical…..

We noticed it. Also noticed how short CTC and The Fridge’s handshake was. From what I hear, CTC really dislikes the Fat Man. I love it, because I really dislike their program.

Happy Birthday and thank you! This is a great site and reflects an incredible amount of passion for NC State.

As a relative newcomer to this site (about a month), I want to say thanks to a job well done. Did not realize this blog has been here only a year. Many kudos to all of you for running it. Now if we could only get someone to run our offense as efficiently……………

    I second Mike’s comments!

Althogh I at times agree with many who wonder about the plat calling at times I think the thing to remember is that this is still a very young team at the major position players. I am glad to see my fellow wolfpack fans venting (as I do) when the team doesn’t win because it means that once again there is a paasion for the football program that for years had not been there. Of course as fans when something goes wrong our first reaction is to howl (no pun intended) for the coach’s head, but when we calm down that feeling does tend to quiet down. I’m not saying that coaches should escape resonsibility for the team’s shortcomings but as fans we must look at what is slowly being built at NCSU.
With some of the new players coming in to join what is there now I honestly think this program is on it’s way to being a consistant top 20 team. A hasty reaction to fire coaches more often than not leads to disaster for a program…two words: Frank Solitch. Think Nebraska fans still are happy with that firing? So to my fellow Pack fans I say be patient because this team is on its way to better things! Thanks for letting me have my own little vent and whenever I am back in Raleigh I enjoy listening to the Buzz…Happy Anniversary!

Sorry I meant “play calling”… (not the best typist in the world here…)

On the other hand, Fridge and Amato had a lengthy and apparently friendly discussion pregame that lasted at least 10 minutes, and maybe longer.

I am sure that Fridge was disappointed in his team giving up multiple sacks, a pick-6 and a game ending INT. Add to it a fumbled punt, and you have a recipe for a loss. His defense played pretty solid ball, and had the rest of the team played as well, maybe we have a different ending.

Mario Wiliams — 13 sacks this year, and that after a slow start. Best ever defender for NC State?

Congrats on your year. You’ve done quite well both in the popularity and the quality of the site.

Congratulations on your one year anniversary! Thanks for giving us all a place to talk about Pack sports, etc. Well, our football team is back in a bowl game (obviously not a BCS Bowl, but better than nothing), and our basketball team is back in the Top 25 in both polls after a beat down of Notre Dame. And, by the way, the reason Notre Dame played “so poorly” was because of our defense and the matchup problems we created for them. Now things get even tougher, at Iowa… let’s hope the rest of the ACC fares better that VPI did tonight (except the Tar Holes) in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge!

In regards to your statement from last year about the opening music for sunday night hoops, yes. Yes I do think you are that out of touch with most of the people who are watching sunday night hoops on a “national” level.

Playing rap music for basketball intros is just as appropriate as playing country music and having 20 truck commercials for football games.

Time to wake up and realize that basketball has placed itself squarely in the hip hop world once you leave the stadiums where old boosters sit in all the good seats. Fox wants the younger audience’s attention and Garth Brooks will not get it.

Shoe commercials, video games, and car commercials predominate basketball advertising now. You in the market for one of those?

  12. Jeff 11/29/2005 at 8:02 AM #

^Great points. First…it wasn’t just the style of intro (hip-hop). It was HOW BAD the intro was. The rap and the production was absolutely horrible. My wife, who doesn’t even care or watch anything, was walking through the room and asked me, “What are you watching. Good God.” I know that she isn’t down with the current day music either…I also know that our combined household income to buy cars, electronics, and consumer staples is a hell of a lot larger than the hip hop crew.

On the broader topic — obviously, if the demographics and statistical marketing information available to the networks indicate that urban kids who love rap music are spending tons of money on the right products…and have carved away 2 hours on Sunday evening to watch higher institutions of learning like Virginia play Wake Forest, then they should definitely continue with their strategy.

I just haven’t seen any numbers to bare out that crips and the bloods are the people who are interested in COLLEGE basketball. NOT the NBA. COLLEGE.

Just curious…if this is such slam dunk marketing that everybody does…why does ESPN not use it for their 300+ televised games, CBS not use it during its broadcasts of March Madness, and ABC not use it during its college basketball broadcasts?

Somebody needs to tell them that they are missing the boat.

    ^correct. College=tradition, NBA=hip-hop.

From the Herald Sun writeup on the game:

    ” N.C. State leads the all-time series 30-38-4.”

The actual series now stands at 30-28-4, with NC State leading.

What? No one is gonna mention we are finally ranked again in the basketball…yay!

  16. Jeff 11/30/2005 at 7:18 AM #

This entry was written before the rankings came out. It is nice to be ranked. Now, let’s hold on to the rankings with a solid year. We were ranked higher than we are now last year at this exact point.
