AP Breaking News: Lee Fowler Fires A Coach

Q: What does it take for “Coach” Fowler to fire a coach at NC State?

A: Win 1 ACC game in five years, and have the AD’s daughter on the team. Shocking news out of the halls of Case tonight:

NC State Director of Athetlics Lee Fowler has announced that head volleyball coach Mary Byrne will not be retained by the program. Byrne, who completed her fifth season on Saturday, posted a 33-122 record as head coach of the Wolfpack. A national search for Byrne’s replacement will begin immediately.

One down, one to go. Another town and one more show. Sorry to borrow some lyrics from Jon Anderson (from Yes not the country singer) but I felt it necessary to highlight Fowler’s myopic view of the athletics landscape. Luckily, next year, when Amato finishes another 6-5 season, maybe Fowler will look to purge himself of further misgivings and look for someone to bring the football program up to its hype. I’m reminded of Billy Packer’s story of an old AD at NC State (the name for now escapes me). Packer said that this particular AD (who was there when Case left, and I believe was responsible for Earle Edwards’ and Bob Guzzo’s hirings) that in his desk he always kept a list of three names who he would contact in case one of his coaches left or needed to be removed. Fowler, I’m assuming, doesn’t have a list and doesn’t even know the names of other coaches who would best fit this program. Because of his inability to see what is so obvious to fans of the program and others, I think Oblinger or someone should have a list of three people to fill that AD chair in the coming years.

SaccoV – Good comments regarding always being prepared for the next hire. There are two thing I can guarantee, the same AD did not hire Earle Edwards (don’t know) and Bob Guzzo (Willis Casey); and we will not have a 6-5 season next year in football.

    If not 6-5 then what?

12 games. Expect 5-7 or 6-6 (bunny non-conference schedule, even softer than this year).

I’m pretty sure we play 12 games.

If we go 6-6 or worse next year and Chuck is still our coach there will be a war in West Raleigh like we have never seen before. The expectations and monies invested will not support this level of mediocrity.

Well…..at least the precedent has finally been set!!!

Apparently a coach must lose over 75% of their games over a 5 year span before there is irrefutable evidence that progress is not being made.

Don’t know about you guys….but I for one will sleep much better tonight knowing where that line in the sand is……
