The Beginning of the End

Well, today we saw it with our own eyes. There is no sugar coating things, there is no denying the reality. Chuck Amato has been revealed as a fraud, a charlatan, a snake oil salesman. We have the talent, we don’t have the heart or the guts to be a champion. And that can be traced directly to Chuck the Clown, with his doofus sunglasses and his Dorothy-like red shoes. As a gentleman in the parking lot pointed out today – we are a victim of our own hype – too much show and too little basic Football 101. It’s all swagger and fireworks and scoreboard intros. And we’ve flushed a great opportunity down the toilet. A team takes on the personality of its coach all right, and the emperor has no clothes. We’ve made too much of an investment in this program to lose to a vastly outgunned UNC team. In fact, it’s a good thing UNC played so badly in the first half – against a legitimate opponent playing decently, State loses by 3 or 4 touchdowns. When you get outcoached by John Bunting 2 years in a row, it’s time to hang up the whistle. Even the lemmings who call the WPTF post-game show aren’t hiding from that.

So what do we do? For 2008, my hope for the nation is drafting a centrist, pragmatic problem solver (Governor Mark Warner of Virginia), to save us from a “lesser of two evils” Bill Frist/Hillary Clinton match-up. For the NC State football program, it’s Draft Norm Chow. Somebody reserve the internet url now, because Norm would kill to come back. Maybe it would work, maybe not – but he couldn’t screw it up any worse than Dorothy.

It’s a dark day, my friends. I am an attorney, who works with many UNC grads, including several delusional ones. Nobody thought UNC could possibly win this game. Nobody thought they could even keep it close. Instead, they won, should have won, could even have won by 20+ if they weren’t as sloppy as us in the first half.

How do you play a game with your bitter rival, a team that beat you on a controversial call the year before, and only play hard for 5 minutes out of 60? It boggles the mind. CHUCK MUST GO.

Face it…all this crying and whining is occurring because the loss to your bitter rival sent you into a tailspin (again). The Heels are down in football and rebuilding in hoops, but as long as you run Chuck and Herb out there, we’ve got a chance. That’s right, as a UNC alum I would like to thank you for allowing us a brief moment of glory in this football season. And no, the drubbing in Louisville doesn’t bother us, we just pop in the tape of NCAA hoops championship game, pop the top on a cold one and occasionally log on to sites such as this to enjoy the “rivalry” with the folks from Raleighwood. Oh, for those of you who think this is all Chuck’s fault…check the series record…ugly. Hope you enjoyed the parade after the Gator Bowl win. Pathetic.

OK, so Chuck hasn’t accomplished much since Rivers left. Hard to argue with that.

But what PROVEN WINNER do we have in mind to replace Chuck? I mean, who do you KNOW to be better who will TAKE THIS JOB? Sure, we can all identify dozens of coaches who are better than Chuck. But all of those guys — as nearly as I can tell — already have great jobs, and/or are in line for MAJOR jobs. Let’s face it: North Carolina is a relatively small state; it’s not like Florida, Texas or California in terms of generating high school football talent. Of the studs that are generated in North Carolina, we split them with UNC, Wake, FSU, Clemson, etc., etc. Conversely, NCSU does not have the “standing” to go get “national prospects”….the best of the best simply are not coming to Raleigh, whether you like it or not.

So, while we are all frustrated with Chestie, let’s make sure we have a BETTER PLAN in place before we do something drastic. As Momma always said, “be careful what you ask for….you may get it.”

It’s always nice to hear from UNCool fans. I like hearing you phonies pretend to be “above” criticizing your coaches: do the names Guthridge, Doherty, or Bunting ring a bell? Enough swatting at cockroaches…

It’s wise to have a Plan B before we part ways with our Coach, Wolfie. The point is so obvious it need not be stated. But just to keep things in the proper context, the AD needs to feel pressure or he will not act. We cannot rely on Fowler to budge until perhaps his seat is warm as well. No excuse-making for Chuck and no sayings from “Momma” (are you Bobby Boucher from the Water Boy?) will turn our program around. How about an AD that is dissatisfied with the status quo and a coach who actually coaches?
