The Atlantic Coast Conference posted its final weekly press release of the season on its website last week.
Congratulations to Julius Hodge who earned ACC Player of the Week honors on five different occassions, more than any other ACC player.
Conference Envy
After the media tried to make so much of the success of a few Big 10 teams in the Tournament, you may be surprised to learn:
===> Overall, the ACC was 10-4 against the Big Ten in 2004-05.
===> En route to winning its first national title since 1993, North Carolina posted consecutive NCAA Tournament wins over the Big Ten’s top three teams – #19 Wisconsin, #13 Michigan State and No. 1 Illinois.
===> With a 12-4 (.750) mark, the ACC was the winningest conference in the 2005 NCAA Tournament while the Big Ten was second at 12-5 (.706). The two leagues combined for 24 of the tournament’s 64 wins (38 percent). No other conference had more than seven wins and only six conferences posted winning NCAA Tournament records.
NCAA Tournament Supremecy
===> With a 310-149 (.675) mark, the ACC is the winningest conference in NCAA Tournament history.
===> With its 12-4 (.750) mark in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, the ACC extended its nonlosing streak in NCAA Tournament play to 18 years in a row. The Big East has the nation’s next longest current non-losing streak at 12 straight years.
===> The ACC has had at least one Final Four team in 16 of the last 18 years and in 21 of the last 25.
===> Over the past 25 years (since 1981) four different ACC schools have won a total of eight NCAA titles, three more than any other conference.
===> The ACC is the only conference to have won 10 or more NCAA Tournament games in each of the past two years and over that span has won more Tournament games (26) than any other conference.
