State hires new Men’s Soccer Coach!

Debbie Yow continues to impressively transform the dormant, underachieving wreck of an Athletics Department left behind by her ineffective, lazy and incompetent predecessor.

Today’s example is the immediate impact Yow has had on the once proud, NC State Men’s Soccer program.

Kelly Findley, a three-time All-American, a former professional soccer player, and the all-time winningest coach at Butler University, has been named the head men’s soccer coach at NC State, Director of Athletics Debbie Yow announced on Wednesday. Findley developed Butler soccer into an elite program nationally.

He comes to NC State following his fourth straight winning season at Butler. More specifically, his 2010 Butler squad entered the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 5 nationally and was one of only two unbeaten teams in the nation. He led Butler to the national stage with top 25 rankings, league championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. His overall record as head coach at Butler was an impressive 59-25-15, and the club’s 16 wins this season ranked among the best in team history.

Additionally, Findley is no stranger to this area; which should bode well for key connections and recruiting.

Prior to coaching at Butler, Findley served at UNC Charlotte for three seasons as an assistant coach and for two seasons as associate head coach. During his tenure at Charlotte, the 49ers compiled a 42-40-14 record, including an 11-7-1 mark in 2004…

Findley served as head coach at Mars Hill College for two seasons, 1999-2000. He also spent one season as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) University, two seasons as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Eagles professional soccer team, and one season as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Judson College of Elgin, Ill. During his tenure with the Charlotte Eagles, the professional club won two South Atlantic Division championships, made two playoff appearances and posted a national runner-up finish.

Following his collegiate career, Findley played professional soccer with the Charlotte Eagles for six seasons. He helped the Eagles to three South Atlantic Division championships, five divisional playoff appearances and two trips to the national finals.

Findley, a former North Carolina ODP State Team coach, holds a USSF “A” license and a NSCAA Premier Diploma. He and his wife, Joanne, have five children, Gabriel, Elysia, Corinne, Stephen and Keane.

    Just wow! Debbie Yow is the MAN – uh , er, WOMAN! Got to make one feel good about the future of NC State athletics. I hope we don’t need a new basketball coach this year, but IF we do then I know she’ll find the right one for the job. Welcome Coach Findley! And thanks again Debbie Yow for coming to NC State!

    From an interview on Pack Pride, ‘Q&A With Kelly Findley, Part I’:

    “…it was really Debbie Yow and Chris Kingston who sold me on NC State being a place that you can win.”

    “NC State is a place where there is support. They are energetic, driven, and hungry. They want to be successful, and they are going to give you every tool necessary to make that happen. That’s what sold me on the opportunity. Obviously it’s a great position, but for me it was their perspective on excellence and their drive to win. That really drew me to the position.”

    “I didn’t want to go to NC State and not have the resources or support to win because the ACC is not very forgiving.”

    “I felt like going to NC State there was no doubt that Debbie Yow and Chris Kingston are going to get it done. I’m excited about the opportunity.”

    I hope Findley and Stevens are good friends…they are about the same age and certainly could be close after working in the Butler Athletics Dept. Could this be a ‘gateway’ hire?
    I am not suggesting that DY took any shortcut hiring a soccer coach. On the contrary, it looks like the hire stands on its own as a great move for the soccer program. Still, Debbie Yow now has first hand interaction with a high level employee from Butler. Hey, it may just be a coincidence…but…this can’t be a bad thing if we make a run at Brad Stevens this Spring.

    Now, now. That just can ‘t be true. AD Fowler told us several times that energetic and driven fans who are hungry to win was a detriment to the athletic programs. Fowler sayeth, thus it must be so.

    Nonetheless, DY continues to impress with the athletic dept. overhaul. It will take some time, but the current administration is taking us in the right direction.

    Too bad a soccer field doesn’t fit inside Carter-Finley. (or does it? w/o benches?)
    We could be treated to a “double-header”, with a soccer match preceding a football game. Anything, (almost), the Pack is good at I’m interested in.

    Night and day from what (Uncle jed) Fowl-up would have signed. At best he would have inked an assist coach from a mid-tier conference.
