State beats George Mason 78-65

State improved to 3-0 and advanced to the Charleston Classic Championship versus Georgetown Sunday (7:30pm, ESPNU) with its 78-65 win over George Mason.

It wasn’t always pretty, and ESPNU didn’t waste an HD camera on this one — what is this, 2006? — and introduced Lorenzo “Browd” at the beginning of the game, but Ryan Harrow led all scorers with 14 points off the bench, combined with Richard Howell’s double-double — 13 points, 11 rebounds — to pull away late.

Update on Tracy Smith from WTVD’s Mark Armstrong:

Tracy Smith out 3 weeks after arthroscopic surgery today in Raleigh. No major damage found

There’s a lot of good stuff on the front page of the blog: SFN regular Cowdog’s Can’t-Miss read about the State-Carolina rivalry, NCState Pride’s Way Too Early Look at the ACC Standings, Swofford’s 89% Pay Hike, Bruce Pearl’s suspension, and the Week 12 AET Index.

Also, make sure to spend some time discussing all of this and much more on the SFN Forums.

Go to Hell Carolina!

The refs wanted to see a good game. I have never seen as many ticky tack fouls called in the first half.

I hear people posting about Javi not playing well, but dig this:

    23 4-5 2-3 0-0 0 3 5 2 0 1 2 10

That’s 1 turnover, 10 points on 4 of 5 shooting, including 2 of 3 three pointers with three rebounds, five assists, 2 steals and only two fouls.

^Javi was great down the stretch. That’s two of three games where he has completely controlled the tempo of the game within the last 5 minutes.

Howell has great hands – how many steals did he have? And he did that a lot last season … sneaky quick.

Thought the Mason zone might be our undoing, but the staff made some nice adjustments to help pull them out of it and pull away in the game. Great job – that was probably the best we’ve played offensively against a zone while Sidney has been here.

Really good team effort – lots of assists and sharing the ball and I thought the defensive effort was really good. Still need some work on the boards, but Howell came up big and proved again he is far and away our best rebounder.

Refs were mentioned above – pretty poorly officiated game up until the last ten minutes. Our crowd was right on to give them derisive mock cheers in the second half.

Can’t wait for the Georgetown game! Go Pack!

I thought Javi played quite well. He was pretty damn dominant there for a couple minute stretch late in the 2nd.

On a side note…I really hate to see Tony Greene officiating our games. He’s a travesty. His officiating in our ‘Bama game several years ago was damn near criminal.

I was at the game tonight Greene is the worse. He blew his whistle all night against us. Hope he does not do sunday’s game.

Watched most of UNC-Minnesota game. Enjoyed:)

Javi did play well. As did most everyone considering T. Smith was out. Great run to put the game away. Can’t really ask for anything more at this point. Leaving for Cheater Hill in 5.5 hours.

It was really important to make the final so we would get to play Georgetown. Only upside potential with that matchup.

Thanks to a minor family emergency (everyone fine now) I only saw the first 2 minutes and the last 3 live but I did record the game and watched the rest after the fact.

My takes from the game –
Lowe’s coaching is quite a bit better with better talent on the floor.
The young guys showed the talent and their lack of experience.
GMU is a pretty good team.
Nice showing and and excellent experience for the Pack.

Now to G’town and the possibility of some credibility.

    More fun than Thursday!
Not sure if you guys noticed, but after the game, before the team left the court Sid grabbed the team and had them wave at the Wolfpackers in the stands to express the team’s appreciation for their being there.

    Classy Sid!

Guys, you want attention?? Beat G-town.

    BEAT CAROLINA!!!!

Nice win without Tracy against a good midmajor. Brown and Harrow continue to impress. CJL is still learning to get into the flow of the team game. Sid is doing a good job of pointing out his mistakes by managing his minutes. He will get it–Harrow and Brown will make sure of that. Wood and Howell are really playing good consistent bball for us. Javi did a good job down the stretch. I still think he dribbles to much of the clock away before initiating the offense, and the offense definitely seems to stagnate when he is in without Harrow or Brown in the backcourt. I still like his toughness and he does not quit. Painter and especially Vberg are raw but are gaining invaluable experience during Tracy’s absence. If Tracy is out for 3 weeks as reported, he will be back for Arizona and some payback from last year when he served a one-game suspension and we lost at the buzzer. Sid and staff seem to have this team’s attention and to have everybody on the same page. Good to see. Now onto Georgetown. Harrow, Brown and Javi need shut down Chris Wright. Go Pack!!!!!!!!!!

My thoughts…George Mason is not a bad team at all.

It was see-saw first 32 minutes, but to think this game was played by 3 Fr, 4 Sos, 1 Jr and 1 Sr, the 1 Jr and 1 Sr did not dominte in minutes, and GM has many more upper classmen, IMO is pretty amazing.

The freshmen make several mistakes as you would expect but they compensate with great hustle and awesome plays. CJL it seems has to be brought down off an out of control high initially last 2 games. He goes down and shoots quick 3’s, just a bit outta control. It;s like Sid has to sit him and say “calm down”. Then he can go back in and play better.

I like seeing Vandy get the minutes but he’s got to learn to put some body on folks. Need to feed that boy some steak and taters and get him in the weight room.

The only 2 items that made me shout at the TV last night were 1-officiating. We were ahead and a spell of ticky-tack calls slowed the game and allowed GM to catch up (intent I believe) and 2-couple of series where we could not get a defensive rebound. One I think GM got like 5 rebounds in a row.

This group if fun to watch. I would love to see us beat G’Town, however without Tracey, it will be a tall order, and I have no doubt they will try to exploit his absence down low with Sampsonn III.

Finally, 2 more wins this weekend could make this a magical, incredible weekend like we haven’t had in a while.1-we beat G’Town, gain great amount of respect and win our tournament (with the added bonus that UNC lost out to Minnesota) and 2-We kick UNC’s ass all over the grid iron today.

Think about how many pieces this team has to be able to step out there and have another balanced effort without the help of Tracy Smith.

Very impressive and reason for a lot of optimism.

  14. wolfonthehill 11/20/2010 at 9:56 AM #

We have to make some noise this year. We have an absolutely ideal blend of youth and experience – across the frontcourt & backcourt. Senior backcourt and frontcourt leadership, and absolute young stud talent at both guard positions and down low. Easily go 8-9 deep… I mean, you can’t ask for a better mix… time to do something with it.

They simply look great at times – a little more consistency, and this is a scary team.

  15. wolfonthehill 11/20/2010 at 9:57 AM #

    Oh – and unc-ch lost. 🙂

  16. DT44 11/20/2010 at 10:41 AM #

What I like is the team’s apparent willingness to get after it defensively—-as if Sid has impressed on them “Force turnovers and bad shots that generate opportunities to run and get a fast pace.” Their buying into that will really tell how good we can be.
