Yates Out For Six Weeks

Rumors circulating around that TJ Yates is out for the season (update: out for six weeks). They will now turn to Paulus or Cam Sexton as QB. As a UNC fan told SFN on friday afternoon “you can’t let injuries be an excuse for having a bad season”.

    Anyone heard about Irving’s injury?

  2. PacknSack 09/22/2008 at 9:07 AM #

They’re being tight lipped. I caught the TOB show last night (I know it’s taped Saturday night) and they said they wouldn’t know until “early in the week.” Horsefeaters. The training staff prolly knew by the end of the game, but needed an MRI to confirm.

The kid is a special player. I commend him for trying to return but admitting he couldn’t go rather than harm himself further.

I’m very surprised about Yates. A broken foot keeping you out for the entire year?

    What does this mean?

Sucks for them, sucks for us. The injury gods must have been disappointed that they only got 1 guy in the 12:00 game and took out their vengeance on UNC in the 4:00 game.

Sorry for Yates that he has to miss the season after working hard all spring and summer.

On a football note, we’ll see what UNC is made of now. Lots of pre-season hype by some and now a road game at suddenly resurgent Miami.

I heard Nate will play this week.

  8. BoKnowsNCS71 09/22/2008 at 9:52 AM #

Yates reportedly out at least 6 weeks for sure and will be re-reviewed at that point.

someone was saying that on the UNC-CH message boards they were actually cheering when Irving got hurt.

I wish no one would get hurt, it stinks, but it also provides excuses for those genetically predispositioned to use them. Paulus will probably be fine once he gets some experience, like RW, but i think Miami is gonna blitz him about 3 times PER PLAY. I have no idea if there D is any good, but if Shannon will just gameplan them like VT, they’ll be all set.

Where’s Tysiac, is he hung over from the partying??? Pickeral must have a vigil going on for Yates cuz there’s updates about twice a day from the N&O, THEIR QB is hurt.

I would expect yates back after six weeks. Unless he’s going to do placekicking while he’s out, there’s no reason a broken foot ought to keep you ought the entire year.

“…there’s no reason a broken foot ought to keep you ought the entire year.”

Unless you’re trying to get a medical redshirt [& he qualifies]. After six weeks, he STARTS to do physical therapy and tries to get back in game shape…

Plus, golden boy Paulus–best QB in the universe [sic]–gets to take his place.

A dook legacy starting for the tar heels will get to wear that baby blue & dook blue. Nice combination. My Carolina buddy is beside himself every time someone mentions they are wearing dook blue. Butch had the dook blue sweater vest on saturday, lol.

  13. burnbarn 09/22/2008 at 11:24 AM #

Did I hear a Carolina player get booed Saturday?

  14. b 09/22/2008 at 11:29 AM #

Look at Andre Brown LY, a broken foot might only be in a cast for 3-4 weeks but it could take 5-6 weeks to get the limp out. If there is a lisfranc sprain involved it probably ends the season. Paulus was okay, but he has a little of that Harrison Beck to his gain.

I actually thought that UNC’s ranking was legit. They are as talented – if not moreso – as any team in their division. I expected them to beat VaTech Saturday. I think that side of the conference is in horrid shape…

Lots of interesting things to play out there – the biggest is if Tech continues on to improve. I honestly think the worst thing that could have happened to TOB – and by default Lee Fowler, was for GaTech to hire Paul Johnson. If his results at GaTech are similar to his past results, look out. Of course, I’ll also tell you that he falls in the “mad scientist” category as opposed to the program builder. His teams are effective, not because of his management style = but because of his genius.

  16. SMD 09/22/2008 at 12:14 PM #

^I don’t know that success by Paul Johnson would have that much of an impact on TOB. If we had held on to Amato and THEN seen success at Ga. Tech under Johnson, the point would be a little more valid.

Given the bare cupboard he inherited, you have to give TOB a minimum of five years. The improvement I’ve seen over the last 8 quarters of football certainly makes me optimistic that TOB can get it done in the long term.

With regards to Fowler, what sucks is that you’d be hard pressed to make a case for letting go of any of our coaches *right now*, except perhaps soccer or volleyball. But given the track record of Fowler, what you’d like to see is the implementation of specific win goals across all sports and for the department as a whole. If a given coach (or AD!) doesn’t meet those, they’re outta here.

Of course, given that NC State’s leadership doesn’t demand athletic excellence, you’d be waiting on that quite awhile! 🙂

I thought Paulus looked awful. I think Yates is probably a league-average QB in any league except for the QB-deficient ACC.

UNC is def. talented–moreso than us for sure, but I like the makeup of our team. Beating them will be tough. They have the best WRs in the league for sure. We need a Brandon Tate-type of playmaker.

Did anyone watch Little? He might be a decent athlete, but the guy is a terrible RB (runs soft, and hesitates too much), and a primadonna to boot. On at least one pattern, he was frantically waving his arms to Yates, as if to say “gimme the damn ball.” Just run your pattern and get open. I am glad we don’t have him.

Contrast him to Eugene, who is a team leader, runs/plays super hard, and is reliable. N&O’s JP Giglio said JE was the key before the game, and he might have been right. He is the glue for our offense.

  19. choppack1 09/22/2008 at 12:29 PM #

Chief JoJo – I like our makeup as well.

I think some of our fans may have pressed the panic buttons a little early – not that it’s not justified. Against USC – we played pretty good until RW got hurt, and in our game vs. Clemson, I thought that TOB was probably quietly pleased w/ how close we were to “getting it”.

As for playmakers – I think we have them – they are just young. TJ Graham has great speed and can make some good plays – he’s just had some drops too. Howard should have had a TD reception in Clemson. Jarvis Williams made a nice catch Saturday…we’re getting there, we’re just young.

Oh yeah, how bout our OL Saturday. There was one play where I swear that Beck could have pitched a tent and made a fire back there. (To his credit – he completed the pass.)

    I’m pumped for USF now!

I’m a little embarassed to admit that i didn’t think the loss of Eugene at the start of the season was a big deal, especially with andre brown back. but eugene is one tough SOB. he makes the 1st defender miss, and will punish you for tackling him. i think it was a unc player last year who said that eugene was the most physical back in the league. i for one am glad he’s back, even if i did temporarily forget his value.

  21. wufpaxno1 09/22/2008 at 12:49 PM #

Yates- Don’t underestimate any foot injury, I’ve had them, you put all of your weight and pressure on your foot and all the pain is intensified, I do not see Yates back this year.

UNC’s Talent- They are very talented, but they lack any kind of real running game, a fact exposed and exploited by Va Tech. Miami has already started blitzing them and probably will not let up until next Sunday.

Leadership- I like J. Eugene, but was disappointed at his Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that all but killed our third quarter drive, and when we were building momentum. We came away with three, but that is still not six. Mental errors like that hurt you. Russell is developing right before our eyes into a fine quarterback, all he needed was more time to get adjusted to the speed of the game. The injury at USC delayed that or we might have shocked Clemson. But the player that I am most impressed with so far is Andre Brown, he has put his injury behind him, stepped up his game, and is on his way to his best, and let’s hope a thousand yard, season.

The Offensive Line- Wow! So this is what it feels like, it has been a long time coming!

Duke Blue or UNC Blue- What is the difference? They both suck, and both make me see RED!

    ECU- Exposed Again, period!

USF- I watched them Saturday against Fla. International. They are ECU number two from the weak Big East. We should be able to expose them as well.

    Choppack1′
And that line is only going to get better. On Brown’s sweep in OT Larsen pulled and was looking for someone to block. Williams looked like he was playing on Sunday. Crouch and McCuller are starting to get tough as well.

Somebody mentioned our “playmakers” are young. They will mature. Right now I like our chances in any game we play. That’s not a prediction, just a personal opinion.

Mike Archer should get a game ball. He is doing an unreal job with a bunch of 2 and 3 star recruits. Nate put the correction in after SC burned us on the middle screen. Our dbs are starting to play better. Gray made a huge hit on Pinky to finish the job that Byner started on the goal line keeper sweep on one of the goal line stands.

  23. McPete 09/22/2008 at 12:58 PM #

I don’t know about us exposing south florida. they have better overall talent than us or ecu. a very nice quarterback, stud defensive end, and a bunch of academic exceptions (maybe they do have that in common with ecu).

i thought the unsportsmanlike penalty against eugene was bs, unless he said something that the refs heard and we didn’t.

speaking of foot injuries, i also have some experience though not the same as yates. i fractured my heel and initially the pain was excruciating. but after eight weeks in a boot, it was pretty much fully healed. of course, i didn’t go out and play major college football right after.

GoPack.com is reporting that both Nate Irving and Russell Wilson will miss this Saturday’s game with USF!!!!
“Wilson, who threw three touchdown passes against the Pirates, suffered an undisclosed injury in the second half of the game but continued to play. He was evaluated on Sunday and O’Brien made the decision then to hold him out of this week’s game,”

“Leadership- I like J. Eugene, but was disappointed at his Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that all but killed our third quarter drive, and when we were building momentum.”

If penalties were reviewable, that likely would have been overturned. That official was “giving us the business.”
