Bunting Gone At End of Season (Updated 9:15am)

BTB

…and the wait for the John Bunting spoof cartoon from the News & Observer will have to continue.

With the news that Carolina will now be searching for a football coach, we are all very excited to read Barry Saunders (surely) imminent column about the lack of diversity – historically and currently – on Carolina’s coaching staff. It will be great to see the News & Observer apply the same editorial bent to UNC’s Department as they do NC State’s whenever something arises. Saunders effectively called for the firing of known discilinarian and ‘good-guy’ Mike O’Cain about a decade ago after a few players had gotten into misdemeanor legal troubles.

But, Saunders has never penned an article attacking Mack Brown or John Bunting, who BOTH ran football programs with far more legal issues than O’Cain. We are guessing that old Barry is just gearing up for a huge piece on the loing history of off-the-field problems and the lack of diversity in pristine Chapel Hill. Can’t wait for it!!

Link to formal Announcement

It’s probably a good move to go ahead and get it announced now. It gives the school a head start on its search and getting positioned for their next coach while saving the fan base and the the administration from ripping each other apart until the end of the season. Additionally, the announcement alleviates pressure from the team the rest of the season and should allow the Tarheels to ‘turn it loose’ the next few games.

Expect high emotions when State travels to Chapel Hill on November 18th.

John Bunting will not return as head coach of the University of North Carolina football program in 2007, Director of Athletics Dick Baddour announced this evening. Bunting, a 1972 UNC graduate, is in his sixth year as the Tar Heels’ head coach. Bunting will continue to coach the Tar Heels through the rest of this season.

Bunting and Baddour met on Sunday at which time Baddour informed Bunting that he would be relieved of his duties at the end of this season. The team was told Sunday evening at a meeting after the players returned from Fall Break.

Bunting became head coach in December 2000. He led the Tar Heels to a Peach Bowl win following the 2001 season and wins over No. 5 ranked Florida State in 2001 and No. 4 Miami in 2004. He has three seasons remaining on his contract (2007-08-09) at $286,200 per year.

Caulton Tudor has some great commentary available by clicking here and 85o The Buzz had the following to say in this entry:

Needless to say, this is going to throw plenty of people off who thought it wasn’t the “North Carolina Way to out a coach in the middle of the season. Most of the speculation was that if there was going to be a change for 2007, it would be handled in a way that would respect Bunting. In other words, he wouldn’t be fired and would be allowed to resign on his own terms. Not so much after today’s events, where it appears Baddour had to make the tough call.

Why the sudden change of heart for Baddour, who has plenty riding on the Bunting hire? Erskine Bowles. We’ve heard chatter that the new UNC system president (and a man with deep roots to Chapel Hill) wasn’t happy with the current situation. He even made a few comments about the team a couple of weeks ago that a few people thought were intriguing. Eddy Landreth of the Chapel Hill News hints at the Bowles connection, and in his Sunday column calls for sweeping changes to take place in Chapel Hill.

Wonder if Cardiff plans to retract his potshot at the radio station that scooped this 3 days ago?

  2. Clarksa 10/22/2006 at 10:09 PM #

^Bunting didn’t resign as the article on Friday suggested…he was fired.

Too bad. Now Duke will once again be the worst football program in the ACC.

  4. Sam92 10/22/2006 at 10:24 PM #

hmmmmmmmmmmmm, with Bunting gone, who does that leave as the worst coach in the ACC?

  5. dthompson44 10/22/2006 at 10:48 PM #

maybe we could get unc to let LF conduct their coaching search…

Why do all the national stories reference “Raleigh, N.C.” and not “Chapel Hill, N.C.?”

  7. Wolfpack4ever 10/22/2006 at 11:30 PM #

Who is the worst coach in the ACC? Depends on the blog you read. The cnadidates are alphabetically: Amato, Bobby B. Coker, Groh, Fridge, and Roof. Recently removed from the list are T. Bowden, Gailey and O’Ryan.

In related news Grobe wins in a tight 2 man race over Beamer for Coach of the year.

SFN: What in the world has Beamer done to be considered Coach of the year? Grobe, Bowden & Gailey are the only coaches deserving of mention right now. Tom O’Brien and Friedgen can work themselves into consideration.

    Clarksa,

He had the chance to resign. He chose not to.

“Why do all the national stories reference “Raleigh, N.C.’ and not “Chapel Hill, N.C.?'”

Although the objectivity of the Raleigh media is less than desireable, I don’t think the Chapell Hill media outlets or the Durham D.A.’s office are a better shot at the truth.

I was really hoping that if this happened it happened after 11/18. Much more likely that UNC plays with some heart and has a “Win one for the Gipper” attitude reagrding our game. Hope I am wrong but I much more concerned about our game now (esp. considering our last two perfromances).

While I can usually count on UNC for a good jolt of schadenfreude, I would trade all of that for a viable program at my own alma mater. Yeah, we’ve had some success this year, but we really shouldn’t be throwing any stones…

    I’m just sayin’…

And geez, if State can’t beat UNC regardless, Chuck should join Bunting on the first Amtrack outta town…

Who is the real loser here? This guy is .500 with our loser and he’s being asked to leave, whereas our guy is here probably forever. If we should happen to lose in Chapel Hill in a few weeks then I ask: “Who is the real loser here?”

74, that is the real question. UNC now has a chance at a better coach. We can only pray they don’t get a better one (although it would be hard to get a worse one).
According to 4ever we should just shut up and blindly support our coach, staff, and athletics admin. Don’t question decisions, gameplans, clock management, etc. Amato is the best we can do and he is our best chance at success in football.
Perhaps that is true, and if it is we are in a very sad “State.” Does anyone really think there is improvement on the horizon with out fball program after watching State the last 3 years? Are there realistic chances that we will improve our recruiting beyond the athletes we currently field in football? (If anything I think Amato and his staff have been recruiting pretty well).
I think the “powers” at UNC saw much the same thing. There was no realistic chance Bunting could get any better consistently. He had a little success at recruiting, but couldn’t improve on the field.
So there is no misunderstanding, I believe Amato should get at least another year. I WANT him to succeed, and State should give him every chance. Still I think many of us would not be surprised, if we finished 3-9 or 4-8. And that’s the point. That should shock the shit out of us, the admin, etc., but it wouldn’t.

  14. Wulfpack 10/23/2006 at 9:14 AM #

^Great points. We all WANT to see some improvement, and we see it in spurts. The issue has been and remains to be consistency. We just can’t get anything rolling once we have some momentum. Wake and Maryland are sound squads, but I’m not going to go saying their talent is beyond ours. To me, it’s all about coaching.

You can pencil in a win for UNC against State on November 18th. Now that Buntcakes has been fired, his players will play loose and with no pressure. His players will want to win one for him against us. And you know that Amato, Trestman, et al will not have our players ready.

  16. GoldenChain 10/23/2006 at 9:38 AM #

This is why you don’t hire ‘within the family’. Punting stayed two or three years longer than he should have. Les stayed around at least 3 seasons longer than he should have. Why? Because you don’t eat your own. Hiring Chuck was a mistake and I can only hope that hiring Sid doesn’t turn out to be one.

^^Let’s face it, the dreaded ‘powder blue’ kinda draws recruits on it’s own, even on the gridiron. That being said, I don’t see Bunting as being anywhere near the force that CA is in recruiting. Either way though, the end results are much too close for comfort, and CA isn’t capitalizing on his own drawing power and his good fortunes in recruiting. He is falling further and further behind schedule as every game passes him by.

UNC will find a better coach. Chuck Amato had better take step back to do some deep soul searching on his own, and try to figure out why he is getting inferior results, with supposedly superior talent. This program is continuely sputtering on about 6 cylinders and the main man may not need to replaced just yet, but it is looking more and more like he is the one due for a major overhaul. Somewhere in that chain of command, there are some fundamental management policies that need to be reassessed.

Not sure I can recall a firing exactly like this one in the Big Four or even the ACC. I think they did the right thing doing it now but I wonder if they thought about not letting him coach any more games and appointing an interim coach. The problem with an interim coach is that he may win a game or two, the players start supporting him, a couple of coaches turn you down and you hire Carl Torbush.

They will have a lot of good coaches to choose from but I am so glad Steve Spurrier is not on the market. Is it possible they will go after a current ACC coach? Before BC came into the league, I’m pretty sure Tom O’Brien was thought to have coveted the UNC job. Politically, I just can’t see them going after Grobe, but who knows. This is going to happen sooner or later and it will represent a real sea-change for the league.

I am looking forward to Bunting providing some farewell amusement. We can count on statements like “the next coach is going to have it made with the talent we’ve assembled and other jewels.

Worrying about who UNC will hire is a little premature. Although, I’ll put my two-cents in for Butch Davis. The “worry” should be on the rest of THIS season! Some have mentioned how the UNC players will respond to this news. There are many examples of a coach being fired mid-season, and then the team rides an “adrenaline high” for the rest of the season. This is a Fact!

Here are the remaining games for UNC:
    Wake Forest,
    Notre Dame,
    Georgia Tech,
    NC State,
    Duke.

I’m not saying the UNC will win out. But the in-state teams had better come ready to play!

I gotta say, I’m a little jealous… I wish they were looking for a new coach in Raleigh.

    Great Points by whitefang.

When will we Wolfpack fans resign ourselves to the fact that the way State is playing this year… is the way they have always played since Amato has been coaching the team… and will always play as long as he is there.

As “The Tuna” says, “You are what you are.”

Well State has been this, is this, and will always be this with CTC.

This thing with Erskine Bowles being involved has gotten me riled up. What is the pres of the UNC SYSTEM doing being involved in the hiring of a coach??? He is 3-4 removed from the process (AD, Chancellor, Board of Trustees). Where was Erskine when we were hiring our basketball coach?

I think the hiring of Erskine as chairman of the UNC system will be everybit the same as Swafford as the conference head. I am really surprised there was no more input on his hiring than there was.

“Wonder if Cardiff plans to retract his potshot at the radio station that scooped this 3 days ago?”

Why would I retract something that is absolutely true?

  24. wayofthemaster 10/23/2006 at 10:23 AM #

Did I forget to mention the lack of time management during games?

  25. JoeDog 10/23/2006 at 10:24 AM #

To continue on my previous post:

“There are many examples of a coach being fired mid-season, and then the team rides an “adrenaline highâ€? for the rest of the season.”

The last Duke Football game I attended fell into this category. Duke had just fired Football Coach Carl Franks on October 19, 2003. The following Saturday, Duke was to play NC State in Durham. Having knowledge of the quote above, I bought two tickets. NC State was a huge favorite. I saw a great game. NC State led big in the first half. But Duke rallied and had the ball approx on NC State’s 45 yard line. Duke needed a TD to win. Duke’s QB was sacked late in the game and the clock expired. This game wasn’t supposed to be anywhere close. But due to the adrenaline rush of the players, they scrapped and made it a close game.

I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’!
