Better News Night / Sat Morn Update (11:15 AM)

We didn’t feel too good on Thursday night because we were struggling with news that Lee Fowler/NC State had been unresponsive to overtures from John Calipari’s people and that NC State’s courtship with Rick Barnes had come to an end.

However, we are feeling a lot better today!!

Since our afternoon update and analysis we’ve been doing some digging and we feel even better about some of the objective/analytical comments that we shared.

John Calipari

* The most exciting item of the day comes from the news that someone not named Lee Fowler who is as close to the NC State search as possible has had major contact with John Calipari.

* The conversations with Calipari have evolved to the point of discussing specific criteria/stipulations that need to be in place for Calipari to accept the job.

* One example of a stipulation for Calipari would be that NC State create a formalized internship program for its basketball players like the one Memphis has at Fed Ex. Calipari wants his kids to have the opportunity well-rounded college experiences and build their overall resumes. Additionally, having his players earn NCAA-approved money in a controlled environment reduces the need and temptation to look for money from agents &/or rogue boosters.

* We were obviously very concerned last night when we reported that the “officially unofficial” search team had not yet reached out to Coach Cal despite his overtures to State. Our concern was rooted largely in the frustration that some of Cal’s contacts were expressing to us. We knew that State was already going to need to work around the “ego issue” created by the appearance that Cal resided on the #2 spot State’s list.

* We do not know if the NC State administration has completely “signed off” on Calipari as of yet. But, WRAZ-TV news in Raleigh reported tonight that Calipari had risen to the status of #1 target of the Wolfpack’s search. There is extra reason to listen to WRAL/WRAZ because the stations are by Capitol Broadcasting, the same company who own the media rights to NC State Athletics.

* Dave Glenn made an appearance on Raleigh radio on Saturday morning basically concurring with our comments. He also mentioned that there may be still be some division amongst some key NC State figures regarding Calipari’s potential candidacy.

* We suggest that anyone whose opinion matters in the search and who has expressed hesitation about Calipari needs to meet with him. Doesn’t anyone deserve at least that courtesy before you make a sweeping decision regarding his career and our program? We have 100% confidence that anyone who meets Coach Calipari won’t have any concerns after the meeting. Our biggest fear is that some of our own idiots would scare him away in such a meeting!

* We believe that if Wendell Murphy puts his stamp of approval on Cal, then Lee Fowler will follow. We also believe that if Murphy and Fowler sign-off on Cal then Chancellor Oblinger will follow.

* NC State’s administration and athletics department have worked damn hard for the last 17 years to create a balanced and academic-focused athletics program. Additionally, Chancellor Oblinger’s reputation amongst the academic side of the University (and the community) is sterling. If the leaders of NC State give their stamp of approval to any candidate, NC State deserves the benefit of any doubt and trust of the entire community/media that nothing would be done that would risk our strong academic reputation.

Rick Barnes

* One of the reasons that the Rick Barnes chapter is not closed is because NC State upped our offer when Barnes was leaning towards saying no (but never told us to go away for ever). The annual compensation numbers is now rumored to be north of $2.0 million.

* Evidently, Barnes’ interest in the job was very high at the beginning of the week and gradually faded as the week progressed because of family concerns – his children are very integrated into Austin and UT. And that is reason #2 million why Lee Fowler’s decision not to fire Herb Sendek five years ago (when Barnes was only three years into living in Austin) was one of the worst in the history of our institution.

* If you were Texas, would you really pay Barnes $2.2 million in light of the fact that he has never won a Big 12 Tournament Championship and only made one Final Four in 8 years? We’re not so sure Texas is inclined to pay but so much when they could turn their attention 90 miles down the road and steal Billy Gillispie from Texas A&M for a million dollars less per year.

* So why would NC State pay Barnes that much? For NC State, it has been because of the uncannily strong “fit”. It may now be evolving into an ego thing. Barnes (and we believe Calipari) is like that one piece of a collection that you don’t have. Individually, that single piece is only worth x. But you are willing to overpay for that one piece because of its impact and the fit with your entire collection.

* As great of a fit that Rick Barnes is with the Wolfpack’s program, NC State now runs the risk of looking whorish in their pursuit of Barnes. Coach Calipari is reportedly not seeking nearly as large of a financial commitment from NC State, and it seems that Calipari may be more genuinely interested in saying yes than Barnes. Why not save $750,000 (in the event that we need it for football one day) and get the coach that has been more successful on the court (Calipari)?

John Brady

* Based on digging from the NC State side, we feel more comfortable about our hypothesis that the John Brady talk today has little merit.

* Based on this article from Baton Rouge, it looks like there is no reason to fear a Brady hiring from the LSU side. We hope that Coach Brady found a way to get his raise wrapped up quickly.

A phone call has not come from North Carolina State, nor its athletic director, Lee Fowler.

Brady said he was aware of his name being linked to the N.C. State opening Thursday by ESPN.com’s Andy Katz, but said there was no substance to the report.

* We are starting to think that some people close to the search just like throwing out some names to send fans on wild goose chases.

* If Lee Fowler pulls off a Calipari hiring, he (and team) will deserve significant credit for the results of the process. We can’t wait to be the first to congratulate him/them!

Interesting developments. Calipari would be a major coup.

  2. Mr O 04/07/2006 at 11:11 PM #

And if Calipari did happen, then we should all be prepared for the criticism. We would be criticized for not being happy with someone who everyone thought was perfect morally and then going for a coach who has a less than perfect reputation.

  3. TNCSU 04/07/2006 at 11:16 PM #

But….does he like to WIN? I’m not sure of any coach without a less than perfect reputation. Who Lee decides on, we should give them a chance to prove themselves.

State just needs to make sure that we don’t dip below the standard that Carolina set when they hired Roy Williams whose Kansas program illegally paid players for years.

UMass was NEVER SANCTIONED by the NCAA. And, in a letter dated June 8, 2004, Tom Yeager, the chairman of the committee on infractions, told Calipari:

“The committee fully recognizes you had nothing to with the violations of Marcus Camby during the 1995-96 season. In a sense, you were an innocent victim.

Conversely, Roy Williams readily admitted that he was a party to paying players at Kansas for 15 years.

Coach K never had his Final Four taken away over Corey Magette getting paid.

  6. VaWolf82 04/07/2006 at 11:20 PM #

You people need to get this stuff out earlier in the evening. Us old people can’t keep staying up this late. 😉

Great job guys. Thanks for the update.

Bring on that kind of criticism Mr. O. We see how long the criticism lasted at UNC after they pushed Doh out for Roy. About 5 minutes. The criticism on the Herb front will be forgotten after the first few wins under Coach Cal.

  8. TNCSU 04/07/2006 at 11:22 PM #

How is it that he was never put on probation (at the very least) by the NCAA? Maybe Barnes is helping State by not blatantly saying NO. Sources (close) at Memphis say that Calipari is meeting with Memphis AD either tonight or tomorrow. Did not know if it involved NCSU, though. I’d bet it does.

Man. This HAS been one HECKUVA rollercoaster ride. I was having fun till last night and this morning, but the news has been better and better.

I’m starting to understand why V had to follow “Don’t give up” with “Don’t EVER give up!”

“We are starting to think that some people close to the search just like throwing out some names to send fans on wild goose chases.”

Probably the truest thing mentioned in the article above.

  11. TNCSU 04/07/2006 at 11:27 PM #

I’ve heard Ben Howland from UCLA has been contacted. Just kidding. I did hear Odom officially took his name out of the hat — hopefully, it never was IN the hat!

  12. TNCSU 04/07/2006 at 11:31 PM #

Does anyone know what happened to the Rick Barnes sighted in Raleigh posting??? Why was it taken down? Copyright infringement?? It was pretty d&*m funny!

SFN – The server hosting the picture took it down because of high bandwidth usage

You know you try to give some ppl a carrot and they even complain about that. Keep in mind it aint over to the fat lady sings, so don’t shoot the messenger when your told she’s warming up and she dont sing.

Barnes or Calipari = We win.

Question/comment… WRAL/RAZ isn’t “affiliated with” CBC… They are owned by CBC. As far as I know, CBC owns no rights to NCSU Athletics, despite being located directly across the street from campus, and Herb’s old office (hopefully John or Rick’s new office) in the Basketball center.

The only rights owned that I am aware of are the long-time NCSU/WPTF partnership… The flagship station of the Wolfpack Radio Network. Am I wrong on that? Has something changed?

Either way, WPTF, WRAL, ESPN, ABC, and GW Bush all get their news from the same sources. I would be very surprised if a local station had an “insider” source that wasn’t shared by the rest of the news industry.

Yall we’ve got to get behind whoever Fowler hires here. Herb was a good coach. We shouldn’t have driven him out of town like that. Even if it was time for him to go, we should have made the move by hiring a replacement instead of giving him a reason to leave us stranded in a coach search.

Don’t let our next coach feel the same way, be it Rick Barnes, Daffy Duck, a 3-year-old kid, or John Wooden himself. It puts the coach under undue stress, causing big losses, therefore leading to more skepticism. Why did we lose our last 6 games to UNC? Probably because poor Herb was afraid he would be lynched.

It’s time for our next Everett Case, Norm Sloan, and Jim Valvano rolled into one. I remember a time when NC State was the ONLY team in the ACC with 2 national championships. 22 years is too long. We need to get back on top in this conference, and make sure Duke and UNC remember where they came from in the ’70s and ’80s. I dont ever want to hear Jim Rome tell us we’ll “NEVER be as good as Duke or UNC.” We were. We will be again. We will be better.

    Go Pack!

  15. packfanking 04/07/2006 at 11:59 PM #

why has no one mentioned Mark Few? He’s proved he’s a winner at Gonzaga. Why not state? I do like the though of Calipari being in Raleigh. Valvano version 2!!!

SFN – Mark Few is from the West Coast. Works on the west coast. Went to college at Oregon. Has built Gonzaga in a weak conference while UCLA and UNLV (and even Arizona to some extent) weren’t succeeding. Some indications have recently trickled out that Gonzaga may not have done everything by the book. Few has never thrown his hat into a ring. Not even Indiana’s. What indication is there that he would be interested or even a fit if he were interested?

  16. bb1983 04/08/2006 at 12:12 AM #

One more note. We all are assuming that hiring the best coach will assure success and the wrong coach will sink us. Remember that the coach feeds off of the program and the fans.

Remember when that funny-looking polish guy started working for Duke? Nobody liked him. Joe Tiede said give him a chance, and now all Duke fans thank God at night in their prayers that they did. Not to subtract from Kryzewski’s coaching skill, but what would he be without the Crazies? Or Kryzewskiville? Certainly not the living legend he is today.

If the name Fowler hires dosen’t make you giddy every time you think about that man in Raleigh, don’t give up on him. Take Tiede’s advice. Give him a chance. Then take some advice from the other funny-looking guy with a funny name – Don’t give up… you know the rest. Herb Sendek left our program with a strong foundation of tournament appearances, a clean public image, and a sweet winning record. If the fans (YOU and ME) get behind our new coach, whoever he/she is, we WILL improve, and we WILL get back to where we need to be in the world of basketball.

    Go Pack!

  17. JimmyVguy 04/08/2006 at 12:16 AM #

I am just glad Barnes isn’t officially out of the hunt. I guess I can come to terms if we hire Calimari. The only problem is, now when I drive 3 hours to a game and three hours back…I won’t get to take the nap that Herb so graciously allowed me to take while watching the stall offense.

packfanking…Mark Few is supposedly saying no to all comers.

  18. beowolf 04/08/2006 at 12:18 AM #

NC State was never the only ACC team with 2 NC’s. UNC was for 1 year, 1982 [fn. 1], right before NC State’s 2nd in 1983. In 1987 NC State and UNC towered above the rest of the conference with 10 ACC and 2 NCAA titles apiece.

    *Footnote*

    1. This was before archeologists unearthed a “Helms Foundation” “national championship” *awarded to* UNC in the 1920s, which despite not involving an actual Championship Game is naturally way better than all the Dixie Classics that Case won, combined.

  19. beowolf 04/08/2006 at 12:21 AM #

Also, unlike NC State’s national championship in 1974 by a team that had only ONE loss in two seasons, and its national championship in 1983 when it beat five teams that had been ranked No. 1 sometime during the season, the “Helms Foundation” title was no fluke.

  20. Chip 04/08/2006 at 12:27 AM #

I will give any coach a chance. But I remember the way I felt when we hired Sendek. I was disappointed that we didn’t get Pitino or Calipari then and I knew very little about Sendek other than he was a Pitino assistant. It was a very underwhelming hire in my opinion. Nevertheless, I held out hope that he would return State to greatness. My support for the man lasted about 5 years before I lost hope. I will be very nervous if we make another underwhelming hire, but I will stand behind any coach regardless.

  21. beowolf 04/08/2006 at 12:34 AM #

I was excited about Sendek when he was hired. He was my top candidate behind Calipari. That’s because I thought he would implement the Kentucky system — tough pressure D, high-octane offense. Plus, he was cerebral; I thought he’d be great.

  22. Jeff D 04/08/2006 at 12:35 AM #

I gotta say I really never gave the WRAL story full weight. I was waiting for someone else to confirm it.

I would love for Barnes to come here just so Doyel can eat shit and die!

  23. 1roofgod 04/08/2006 at 12:39 AM #

I would like to contribute $500.00 to buys the tv rights from Don Shea to get him off the screen with our Pack Coaches…He sets us back in recruiting and fan perception, he’s an ICON for some but I also hear there’s a graveyard in Wisconsin for the “Big Boy” statues that once stood in front of Shoneys. The wolfpack suffers everytime that “stodgy” 50’s cool gets on the screen, (he’s worse in person, Charlies on 9th Street in Durham with Frank Dascenzo) Let’s upgrade everything and at least move our shows into the 90’s. I know Chuck seems a little self conscious when on the show, but he’s okay. So i’ll put $500 in the pool and if we can we will buy Don out and let him move on to full time retirement.

A great find on the PackPride forum: JOHN CALIPARI REMEMBERS JIMMY V

On the Jimmy V Foundation pages:
    http://www.jimmyv.org/archives/jimmyvme.cfm?storyid=14

*… He had a great feel and a great way with people. After our Florida State game down there – we lost – (then-FSU coach) Pat Kennedy and his staff and my staff went out with him. He only had a few months to live. He was in absolute rare form at that point. His vitality for life, what he was about, he just made you laugh. And then people want to take away from his coaching. He was a great coach because he got kids to play hard, he got them to play unselfish and he got them ready for big games. He understood what big games were. They take that away from him because he was so funny, but he was also a terrific coach.*

    Read the whole thing.

  25. JimmyVguy 04/08/2006 at 12:56 AM #

    So what is the deal???

I am so excited I can’t stand it. I was born in ’81 and wasn’t old enough to know much about basketball until about the 89-90 season. So its an feeling I barely remember when you talk about excitement and NC State basketball. I can’t wait to finally get a coach capable of taking us to another title.
