NoRedZone Fired After One Year

Former NC State Offensive Coordinator Noel Mazzone didn’t last long at Ole Miss. He was fired today after leading the Rebels “with one of the nation’s worst offenses.”

Ole Miss must have really hated NoRedZone as he still has two guaranteed years on his three year contract that pays him about $230,000 annually.

Ole Miss ranked 111th in Division I-A with 281.7 total yards per game, averaged an SEC-worst 13.5 points and 73 yards rushing, and ran for a combined 48 yards in ending a 3-8 season with consecutive losses to Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State. The Rebels rushed for 10, 7 and 31 yards in their final three games.

Most Wolfpack fans were clamoring for NoelRedZone’s head last season, but Chuck Amato was put in a precarious position in the offseason when the Wolfpack unexpectedly lost Doc Holliday and Reggie Herring to Florida and Arkansas, respectively. Mazzone made Amato’s life a little easier by finding a nice deal elsewhere and not putting the pressure on Chuck to be fired in a move that would have created more negative perception about the Wolfpack program in the press.

Mazzone was ‘famous’ for an inconsistent offense in Raleigh that struggled to score touchdowns in the red zone. These struggles helped produce a disappointing 7-5 record in Philip Rivers’ & Jerricho Cotchery’s senior regular season with an offense that also included Tramain Hall, TA McLendon and a host of other talented players.

In 2004, the red zone performance of Mazzone’s offense improved, but his inability to call plays that Jay Davis could execute was a key component in the Wolfpack’s turnover problems plaguing the team in almost every loss. Davis threw key (multiple) interceptions in games against Ohio State, Georgia Tech, UNC-CH, and Clemson that could have easily been avoided with prudent play calling.

Mazzone’s firing is also being discussed here, where a seemingly knowledgeable fan has shared the following:

Ole Miss hired their head football coach- Ed Orgeron- as a backup after Dennis Erickson fell through. They apparently had all the paper work done with Erickson but it fell through at the last minute. Erickson was going to hire Orgeron as his Defensive Coordinator. When Erickson backed out Ole Miss panicked and hired Orgeron as head coach. Orgeron was voted top recruiting @#%$’t in the country before he was hired while at USC. But the problem was he is rumored to have some drug and assault charges from when he was younger. To combat the risk they were taking hiring Orgeron the AD wanted to hire an OC that could potentially take over as Head Coach temporarily if Orgeron failed.

The AD hired Mazzone to a three year deal and Orgeron has never liked him. He was was fired about three games ago and has had lame duck status ever since. They have been seen arguing on the sidelines and supposedly Mazzone was told to leave at halftime and not come coach the 2nd half against Miss. St. Ole miss had about 38 yards of total offense in the 2nd half.

Found this in the SFN Archives from BJD. It is WONDERFUL having historical archives to peruse:

Look, I am the last person to come across as defending Noel Mazzone. His play-calling was bewildering, to say the least. He frequently called high-risk, low-reward passes (most notably the out pattern that travels all the way across the field, but only 2-3 yards DOWNFIELD – you know, the direction you have to go in order to get first downs and ultimately score) that his QB simply could not throw well.

Defensive lineman made game changing plays twice this year on such predictable high-risk throws (the tipped pass at UNC that was returned to the NC State 2, and the Clemson DL that took the INT in for the score). These DL’s clearly dropped back in anticipation of such a throw. That would not happen if we weren’t so predictable.

The offensive stats from Ole Miss, Auburn, and State under Mazzone’s leadership were posted last year on PP. The only time NM ever had an offense that ranked in the top 50 of Div 1A was Philip’s senior year. How he keeps getting OC jobs is beyond me.

Yeah, we sure lived to regret that move (as some on PackPride insisted). I shudder to think how crappy we could have been with Mazzone still here. At least we have some hope that Trestman will get better with time.

And hey, if you want to revisit my archives, my Gary Crowton article stood the test of time pretty well. You have to assume that Crowton is the favorite for the “top assistant coach” award (forget the name), after his masterful work with the Ducks.

No surprise here. Now if only we could rid ourselves of Trestman, who also seemed to be an advocate of the 40 yard sideline pass to gain 2 yards upfield. At least Mazzone had enough sense to get the ball to Tramain on crossing routes and square-ins and let him use his speed. What a shame #21 did not touch the ball more than one a game.

I agree Hall should have touched it more, but without a consistent QB it’s kind of hard to get him the rock. I think ridding ourselves of Trestman is the last thing we need to do right now. We run through OC’s like they’re toilet paper at a chili cook-off. He is a good OC and has been at both levels. He really had nothing to work with on the O-Line and even less at times under center. Since he signed a contract for a few years (not sure how many) he can now recruit his guys and fit them into his system better. From what I have heard Burke is a stud and has some sort of family tie-in with Trestman so maybe this will be “one of his guys”. Plus as much as I hate to say it the sideline pass with probably still be part our game a couple of times a half, because it is part of the “west coast”.

I agree stability is needed. Trestman has a 2 year contract. I did not like him when he was in Cleveland (so was I), thought he was terrible. Nothing has changed in my opinion. Yes he has been on pro level for years, 22 to be precise, but never stayed long with any team before he was run out of town. The Raiders were the exception when they went to Super Bowl a couple years ago. Other than that, his offenses have always been on the lower end of the production scale. But yes, stability is needed and whatever it takes – I have said many times the biggest problem we have is keeping assistants.

I’ve never been a fan of “system coaches”. Utilize the talent you have and develop that talent! We have running backs galore and we are a pass first offense both last year and the first 6 games this year. It doesn’t add up.

I agree about using the talent that you have to its optimal ability.

But, I can’t get totally down on Trestman yet. I really feel like he was trying to make chicken sald with chicken shit this year with our horrible offensive line and quarterback play.

As much as people want to paint me with a quick trigger related to coaches, I think that I am simply decisive once I decide to make a decision. I don’t think that it is fair to pass judgement on Trestman after one year. (Although Mike seems to have followed him longer than one year).

He seems quite intelligent to me. As long as that intelligence does not manifest itself in stubbornness and he has the ability to learn the college game in a manner consistent with his intellect…then I will be interested to see how we evolve in the coming years.
