ECU’s Pirate Logo…Updated

pirateslogoSomeone with a biting sense of humor has updated ECU’s logo to the modern version of Somali prates.

If you read Deadspin or Every Day Should Be Saturday you’ve probably aleady seen this, but we thought we would add it here and put it forever in the archives.  Apparently, it all started at the site New Raleigh, where the comments from the ECU faithful are shall we say far less than pleased.  Many folks there say that the modern version of the logo equates their beloved school in Greenville with terrorists, unlike the old logo and its association with the fun-loving swashbucklers from the 17th century.

I guess ECU doesn’t mind being associated with terrorists from four centuries ago but hates being associated with the ones that are of contemporary times.  To me, there really isn’t much difference at all, save the difference in years.

No doubt this has Terry Holland going “Arrrrrgh!”

    Hilarious …

Not sure why they’re so upset about it … A few of their fans would fit right in w/ the real pirate crowd.

Thought about this the other day in a rant about Pirates. Looking forward to the comments.

I’m pretty sure EZU offers a major in raping and pillaging.

    ’em eye-rate pie-rates! Haw haw!

I did see this on EDSBS but thanks for posting here…I thought guns, boats and looting would appeal to the ECU crowd…they’ve certainly displayed their talents for property damage and drunk and disorderly everytime they visit Raleigh…

  6. TomCat 04/17/2009 at 8:01 AM #

They sure raped and pillaged the Pack baseball team Wednesday night… wheew (we played like we were drunk & disorderly).
Funny as heck logo 🙂 ha. The Somali crowd appears to be more “real life” incarnate of Waterworld or MadMax…. than Johnny Depp & Orlando Bloom. Too bad they don’t have oil reserves, Halliburton would have a Starbucks and Abercrombie & Fitch on every corner.

It’s a lighthearted joke. I don’t see why the Pirate fans have their panties in a wad. Nobody’s really equating them to modern day Somali pirates. People just need to chill out…

It’s mildly amusing, but pretty obviously meant to rile people.

How would we feel if they did a picture depicting Tuffie as a Nazi U-Boat officer.

P.S. Anyone whining about an imagined difference between “Wolfpack” and “Wolf Pack” really should get over themselves

  9. PeeDub 04/17/2009 at 8:54 AM #

Did you see Das Boot? Those guys were pretty badass. And not many SS officers on UBoats. Just machine smooth seamen (C wut I did thar?) So yeah, I wouldn’t mind it.

“How would we feel if they did a picture depicting Tuffie as a Nazi U-Boat officer. ”

There was a cartoon several months ago about Tuffie as a suicide bomber on that site as well.

The key difference here is that Tuffie is not modeled after a 17th century terrorist pirate and ECU’s is.

Not sure how it’s meant to rile people … it is what it is … stupid and funny.

If somebody put a pic up with Tuffie as a U-Boat officer I could care less … it would be stupid and funny.

People who get riled up about stupid and funny stuff should really get over themselves. This is taking the PC approach to a whole ‘nother level.

Reminds me of the hissy fit DBR had when we had a parody post comparing ourselves to the French. They took one throwaway line out of conteXt and accused us of comparing K to Hitler. Very touchy folks, these Dukies.

  13. Alpha Wolf 04/17/2009 at 9:45 AM #

^ That begs for one of those Hitler films that is all over YouTube.

A lot has changed over 400 years, but the price for a haircut remains the same…

I like the irreverance of sports blogs. They aren’t meant to be PC or polite, and I find that refreshing.

We do request civility among þhe SFN community, but blogs should be independent and outsidery, pushing buttons and occasionally the limits of good taste!

“unlike the old logo and its association with the fun-loving swashbucklers from the 17th century”

Actually, it would be the 18th century. Though there were pirates prior to the 18th century – the “golden age of piracy” as referenced in the link was from 1700 to 1730.

  18. Alpha Wolf 04/17/2009 at 12:04 PM #

    Cannonball –

“The Golden Age of Piracy is a common designation given the period roughly spanning from the 1650s to the 1720s.” – wikipedia.

You may want to check out The Lost Fleet from 1678 and the role that the Filibustiers (the French word for Pirates) had in that affair, the French privateer fleet that patrolled the reef off of Los Aves Island (pursuing Dutch-flagged ships) and so forth and so on. Clearly, the Golden Age preceded the early 18th century period that was the climax but by no means the beginning of the period.

Well, I guess I get ECU’s pain but that pain is more about stereotypes than anything else… so screw ’em.

Seriously, the Somali pirates are PIRATES in the classic sense; they are in it for the MONEY.

They are not, generally, terrorists. Whether you find piracy terrifying or not (most do, I’m sure), what actually makes a terrorist a terrorist is not that he is terrifying but that his primary intent is to terrify, generally for political gain.

I assure you, the Somali’s don’t care about terrifying anyone… so long as they get a sufficiently large briefcase full of cash.

  20. CannonballJunior 04/17/2009 at 12:43 PM #

Aware of piracy prior to the 18th century – just pointing out the “17th century” link which was provided refers to the period 1700-1730(18th century).

And definitely the age of piracy for coastal Carolina (reference ECU) would have been in the early 18th century.

I’m not defending the Somali pirates in any way, shape or form. They all deserve to die IMO, one bullet apiece…….

But in some ways, they’re not as bad as those “traditional” pirates from 400 years ago. These pirates seem to be mainly after the money. They’re not too into killing for sport (until they decided they wanted some revenge against us for killing their men). Again, I’m not defending these clowns. My point is that those old “fun” pirates were pretty darn horrible, arguably MORE horrible than the ones we have today. Ever heard of “keel hauling”, or “walking the plank”? Those pirates were some pretty darn nasty fellows!

I have a close friend at EZU. They don’ have a major in raping and pillaging; but it is a weed out course.

Why is my previous post still “awaiting moderation”? Other posts have appeared since mine.

Why are individual posts being moderated in advance anyway?

Better yet, THIS post did not get moderated. It appeared immediately.

    I’m confused…..

“How would we feel if they did a picture depicting Tuffie as a Nazi U-Boat officer.” They would get him confused with Nate Irving on the goal line and shit themselves. Besides that what are they going to put the picture on? A frosty beer mug?
